To add to this — and this really is the answer — you can ask, when you get an assignment, “how long should I plan to spend on this?”
Aim for that, but if it takes longer, it takes longer. Just bill your time.
It took me three years to realize that I was compromising the quality of my work by worrying about this. Think of it this way: by taking your time and doing good work, you’re actually saving the client’s money because that’s less time your partner/senior will spend reviewing.
Yes, this way of thinking helped me as well, especially as the lowest-rate biller on the team.
IF the partner doesn't tell you, see if there is a way through accounting to review invoices and see whether or how much of your time is being written down or written off.
Sometimes partners do this bc clients are cost sensitive and it has nothing to do with the efficiency of your work product. If you notice it a lot, it doesn't hurt to raise the issue from the perspective of "am I progressing the way you would expect for my level?"
Always bill all your time and let the partner figure out the bill. They will tell you if you are not meeting expectations as it comes to bills, but they can't know your efficiency (and progress) if you don't record everything
