How do I know if leaving consulting would be right for me? I’ve been thinking about it for the past year. I feel very unfulfilled and unappreciated. I tried to brace through till next promo - which I ended up being passed over for last Dec. I’ve started looking into other lines of work that may be more rewarding for me, but I can’t seem to make the leap. Mainly, I feel reticent on letting go of the prestige that comes with consulting, and that maybe I should hold out for the promotion.

Anyone been on the same boat? How do you navigate on making the best decision for yourself?

I applied to several other consulting firms (Bain, BCG, Deloitte). Had rounds of interviews for all last year, but didn’t make it to the offer stage. It’s demotivating - that, and how I feel at work rn and makes me wonder if I’m just not cut out for consulting. So right now, I just can’t bring myself to case prep even more and apply to consulting again. Whereas other jobs that’s out there on LinkedIn does seem interesting or impactful, but tbh haven’t found anything other that really, truly interest me. So feeling a little stuck atm.

Agreed with M1. Also we tend to over index on how much we learn and grow in consulting. Guys there are roles out there with smart people with high growth less craziness but also better impact. I’m in one now and my tc also increased. Not worth staying in consulting if you are miserable.

No way M2! Smart people only go into and stay in consulting. And there’s no possible way to make a ton of $$$ outside of consulting. How dare you say otherwise?!? /s

Hi op, I have been feeling the same way but due to burnout/lack of self esteem etc I didn’t do any active applications. However have you considered simply updating your LinkedIn and paying for Premium + setting your profile as “open for opportunities”? That’s what I did and indeed I did two final rounds with two companies last friday, and waiting to hear outcomes today or tmw. The prestige of consulting is fabricated in my opinion - I have worked on more interesting and fulfilling stuff outside, before joining. Sure, use it as an edge to apply elsewhere but if you are not happy, definitely try and jump ship.

What would be your dream job? And yes I’ve been in the same boat, I like challenges and don’t like to quit until I feel like I am good at what I do. The amount you learn in consulting is incredible But it’s a tough line of work, I’ve experienced and have heard of many other who feel like your ego takes a major hit. Especially in a toxic culture. I found a firm that let me ask questions and try new roles. I recommend switching your firm before deciding to get out of consulting. Smaller firms may give you the opportunity to take on more leadership roles, be noticed and appreciated more,so just a thought. Have you tried to switch firms yet?

I have also felt the same way and since this year it has become even worse in terms of being unfulfilled. I have been thinking about taking a sabbatical as a result or even quitting and taking a big risk of trying to make a start up. However I still haven't made up my mind...

Interviewing for a great position in industry (tech). They have equity comp & great benefits. Spoke to their HR, then interviewed with 2 people in the tax department and am getting scheduled for a next round of interviews. The only problem is: the office is about 1 hr from my house (I own). They said repeatedly that they want someone who will be in the office 5 days a week. I would actually move but can’t rent out my place now due to some repairs going on that will take 4-5 months. Thoughts?
