How do I lessen the resentment I feel towards associates who do subpar work, or take lots of vacation? Being more successful and making more money only goes so far.

...Knowing enough to think you're right, but not enough to know you're wrong. Ask yourself this, if suddenly you were no longer at the firm, would the firm stop winning cases? Would billables evaporate? Would life disintegrate to a lawless wasteland?

First stop judging. It’s coming from a negative place and really just says that you’re judging yourself. The fact that they are making choices that make them happy does not reflect anything upon them in a negative way. The fact that you are valuing yourself only upon your title as an attorney and how “hard you work” is your issue and not theirs. you are in control of your life and if you choose not to take a vacation and to work yourself to the brink then that is your choice. If they choose to have a life and work to live instead of living to work that is their choice. You are resenting it because you are unhappy. You’ll continue to be unhappy until you make the choice to choose your life and you will see that everything will be OK.

Again, this happens all the time in every firm. There are superstars and there are middle of the pack associates and there are bottom associates. You should be glad that the partners view you as reliable and their go-to. If you’d rather not be, then start saying no and taking more trips. Superstars have to work harder. You don’t get extra credit for nothing. Yes, you actually have to work more and work harder to get paid more and get better recognition. That’s how it works. If you don’t care about that, then stop doing it and fall to the middle / bottom like those you resent so much.

Surprised a bit at the pile on! I struggle with this too. My brain realizes that it’s partly because I am a nerd and a workaholic and can’t expect that of most people. What helped me was to take a real vacation myself!!!

Take time to train them and make them better!

Have a primary home and a vacation home. We go to vacation home for holidays as family is near by but it is a 2 day drive to get there or a plane ride. With our pups driving has become more of the norm. We do not rent when we are not there. Thinking of buying third home about 4 hours from primary home on the coast for enjoyment. I worry about juggling 3 homes. Anyone with experience with this? Advice?

If buy the partners you work with regularly a holiday gift, how much do you spend? Usually I get baked goods or food items which you can’t tell the actual amount spent on. This year, though, I’d like to support local restaurants by encouraging people to order takeout—hence, giving gift cards.

How much is appropriate for a restaurant gift card from an associate to a partner?

Spent my first day of PTO trying to get a PS5. In the end I emerged triumphant!

I gave notice to one of the partners at my small firm last week. It was amicable, but she told me to wait to tell the other partner until he returned from vacation. In the interim, she told the other partner and he blew up. He is now making insane demands and threatening to call my future employer if i don’t meet them. Most problematically, he refuses to meet with me to discuss transitioning my cases over the next week. I am not sure what to do, and I am worried about ethical rules.

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

Tips for not crying when you’re asking for leave? I’m so stressed and overwhelmed with work and the CPA exam and I want to take time off to just put all my energy into the exam and be done with it. I want a month and a half to finish it up and then have a week or two to decompress before I come back. But anytime I wanna talk about it, the stress and nerves overwhelm me and my eyes start welling up. Idk how to control it.

Just started a new job and have no PTO and my gf is moving back to her home country. She’s upset that I can’t come with her and doesn’t want to go on the weekend because thats when her goodbye party is planned. Yes, we’re gonna do long distance. AITA?

So, how many days left before you start the holiday seasons? What are your biggest priorities for the new year?

Hi, I work under contract for a foreign company as an APM. I have an import export licence and send the monthly invoice to my HR. My benefits include the following in-hand allowances: food, internet, sports, vacation, training and hardware. Plus a yearly bonus.
Can someone help me out as this is new to me, how can I save my taxes? (I have to file ITR 4)

I am currently at a firm and received an in-house offer. Aside from main items like comp and big ticket benefits like PTO/health insurance/401k, what other items do I need to think about discussing/negotiating? For example, fees to keep bar licensure, professional association fees, CLEs, etc. I feel like there is so much on that end I currently take for granted being covered at my firm. Anything else I should consider?

Took my first vacation (1 week) in over a year to visit family. Was bombarded by emails from one partner asking me to complete non-time sensitive motions, which he hasn’t even bothered to review. This is my third firm in three years (first I left as I was severely underpaid, second I left for a 100k increase in salary), but this lack of respect for my boundaries has made me want to move again once I’ve completed 18 mos. Bad? They don’t do this to the other associates (all male).

Any advice is appreciated!

Whoever said employers don’t care about grades and transcripts after your first job was a liar. Every lateral position that I’ve applied to as a 3rd year has requested transcripts. Why do we lie and tell grads that employers don’t check transcripts when they do. My coworker, a 5th yr, had to submit his transcripts also to lateral job. Side note - it speaks volume when multiple associates are trying to lateral at the same time
