I also managed my career without ad school. Got myself into WK Portland, 72 and Sunny, etc. Maybe I’m misreading, but I don’t think numbers, case studies, or awards matter to most people you’ll meet...unless they’re attached to really interesting creative. I didn’t have any of that shit. I just kept chipping away at creative that would get people to notice me. Numbers and case studies weren’t even in my top 20 concerns. I didn’t even care about the awards game honestly.
People want to look at your book, be entertained, and start to imagine how your skills apply to their clients. Knowing that your digital banners raised sales by 13.7% shouldn’t be on the radar of anyone you’d want to work with.
same ;)
Following, because I need this as well. I got a Graphic Design degree and have a non-traditional career path as well.
One thing my first CD/Owner of a 5 person shop taught me was make yourself and work seem bigger than it is. Use mock-ups by possibly making them yourself, don’t let it look like every other bus stop in 20 other portfolios. Take a photo if needed.
Yet it’s hard too when at smaller places you do more traditional work. Then you look at some Senior ADs or Copywriters and they have a lot of film spots.
Here’s to hoping CDs and others say more than “the idea is the only thing that matters” or “If the work is good then your book is good.”
... I’m now at a well-known agency, but I didn’t go to portfolio school and I spent the early years of my career in-house and at a small embedded agency for the same client. I just earned a senior promotion, but I’m starting to become self-conscious about the lack of “results” I have to show for it.
