I’ve learned that the type of leadership and management at the firm makes a huge difference on something like this. Small mistakes at my prior firm almost spiraled me out of practice. Small mistakes at my current firm are, “Did you fix it? Okay. Why are you telling me?” And by small mistake I include forgetting to serve pro se with MTD in federal court, a mistake that drew a motion for sanctions. I fixed it, we laughed, all is well. They should be focused on your judgment more than small mistakes.
This this this
If it helps, I made lots of nitty / minor mistakes as a junior and here I am, a partner in a top firm. Do your best, move on and try not to make the same mistake. You’ll most likely be fine but regardless, dwelling on it and letting it ruin your mental state isn’t productive.
Take a deep breath and remind yourself that you’re capable of learning from your mistakes and growing in your career. Hone your attention to detail. Proofread your docs. Make a checklist of things you commonly forget to do and hopefully you’ll eventually remember to do all those things.
I relate to this post so much. I still make silly mistakes and when I notice them, or worse, when others catch them it really gets me down. I’ve been making more of an effort to slow down and sit on my work for a bit before turning it around. I walk away from it for a bit and then look at it with fresh eyes before I send it out to the client or whoever else needs to see it. This approach has helped me so much.
Keep a list of wins, too.
We are human. Even the best and most organized of us makes mistakes with all the things that get thrown our way. Are you doing good work 99% of the time? Then forgive yourself for the 1%.
I relate to this so much.
