How do I pick myself back up and keep from being resentful? I went up and did not make the promotion to manager this review cycle. This, despite a strong case and backing from practice leadership. I have been staffed in the Manager role since last November. The decision makes me feel like I’m being taken advantage of. Separately, I took a medical leave to tend to my suffering mental health. I went on leave just as I heard back on promotion. I am dreading coming back, knowing I feel this way.

Lots of promotions are being delayed because of the effects of Covid. It’s unfortunate but true. Hopefully it brings you some comfort that it’s not just you and likely has little to do with you or your performance. I’m concerned about your mental health though, if you still feel this way going back to work it might be time to look for a new career. If you’re so stressed that your mental health is suffering, it’s only a matter of time before your physical health suffers as well.

Thanks both. D1 as you said, I’m trying to take the long view. I have at least 40 more years to work (!) B1 I don’t know yet, but will once back from leave. I then have a full discussion of my case and feedback. It’s definitely part of the reason I’m dreading going back, though interested to hear the thoughts. One of my concerns is how the delay might affect consideration of an MBA application, which I plan to do in the next 1-2 years.

Ok. First of all, give yourself permission to be disappointed, mad, sad, whatever. Then think about whether you were just excited to get promoted or whether you enjoy your job and look forward to continued growth and responsibility (and the pay that comes with it). If the latter, just consider that it happens on a different timeline. If it is the former, maybe this gives you an opportunity to reflect on what you want. There is an old saying about resentments - it’s like you drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. It only hurts the person holding onto it.

Sometimes, we get “gifts” even when it seems like a flaming brown bag of dog poo on the front step. Sounds like you have exactly the right attitude. Now you can either make a plan to change what you aren’t happy with, or make a change that inspires you! You got this!

I was laid off from a resource management role, working with employees approaching or on the bench, working with managers to staff projects, and support functions like report creation, scheduling, etc. Roles like this are few and many large consulting firms have frozen internal hiring. Do you think it would be beneficial to get a SHRM cert? Would that help get a "talent related" HR role? Worth the money? I have a background in recruitment as well.

Coming from a big 4 - Can we mention the names of the clients we have worked with over the years when interviewing? I am at a boutique agency now working with some people who came from Accenture and some other consulting companies and I noticed that they will reference their clients by brand name. If it is a past project and you do not give any client sensitive information is it OK to share the names of the brands that you've worked with in your previous role? What's standard?

Does anyone have financial anxiety ? I realize I have a toxic relationship with money, maybe because I just started my career (I’m 26yo). But when it comes to spending, I get anxious. I did everything right: saved enough for emergency fund, 401k, Roth IRA and investment stocks. However, I’m always afraid to spend a lot for certain circumstances (ie. Health, moving/new apt, etc..) and be left with less money since I work so hard for it. How do you overcome this stress and anxiety ?

I am considering transitioning from being a W2 employee to a independent contractor/1099. What are some important questions I should ask before making a decision? For context, I have been with my litigation firm for just over 3 years and have been barred for 4. I am doing fine, but I dislike the job and would like to reduce my hours (and get rid of some of the non billable work I have to take on). Ideally, I would transition to a job that I love, but I’m not sure what that is yet. Cont. below.
