How do I provide references for job applications when no one at my current (and only) employer knows I’m considering leaving? I don’t feel like I can ask anyone from law school bc I’m 5 years out and never really had any meaningful relationships with professors anyway.

I had a very similar situation when I got an offer to go in-house. I spent my first 5 years of practice at one firm, in addition to my law school summers, so I had to get creative for references. I ended up using the externship coordinator at my law school, the person who was my EIC when I was on a journal in law school, and a co-worker who had left my firm about 6 months prior.

This is really helpful, thanks!

Did you do any internships? Networking is so important in law. I hate it, but you gotta do it.

I’m in a very small practice group so there aren’t many people that I work with directly, but there is a semi-retired former partner that I could maybe ask. Thanks for the advice!

Is there someone from your firm who you worked for that left for a new job or retired? They could be a good option.

Yes, there may be one or two I could ask! Thanks for the tip.

I’m a securities attorney so appreciate any help on this. I just received a collections notice for a toll I apparently didn’t pay from 2014. I haven’t received anything on this at least in the last 5 years and was unaware I owed. What is the best way to respond if I want to be sure this does not show up on my credit or it is removed if it has? Can I negotiate payment for a letter? I have worked very hard to clean up my credit in the past 10 years and I don’t want this screwing me up.

Hi all! I am a lawyer with a decade of global experience (based out of New Zealand and working with counterparts across the world). I started out as a Barrister (trial attorney) and then moved into government with a stint in a startup in between. Recently moved to the USA and trying to get a job while I study the bar. I’m curious if there are others here who migrated to the USA? I’m having a hard time getting anyone to take me & my experience seriously here!

I am not sure what to do. Advice?

Can we get a list of firms with a low billable hour requirement? I’m not about this 2000 hour big law life. T-14, graduated with honors, getting good reviews, but just looking to move to small/ mid sized market with less hours (and a pay cut probably which is fine) that I can manage life at for a few more years as my husband and I grow a business before getting out of the law entirely.

My firm requires 200 hours bills per month, now they have been cracking down on us to bill 50 per week. I’m so exhausted. I absolutely hate this place. Insurance defense wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for these insane requirements. We also have to do update charts by weekly for every single one of our cases. All for a measly $85k while the firm makes thousands and thousands per week from each attorney. You only get a bonus for meeting the billable requirement, only to end up with about $2200.
