How do I quit coffee?

I quit coffee after years of 2+ cups a day. For me, the withdrawal migraines were actively taking a toll on me, and I didn’t want to be addicted to a substance my whole life.

I picked a period outside of busy season, and just quit cold turkey. But, I had migraines for a solid week! (YMMV). I just drank a lot of water and exercised a ton that week. Today I am proudly 2 years coffee sober. We did a BINGO icebreaker at the last training and I was one of two people in the whole classroom that didn’t drink coffee. (Yep the other was Mormon)

PS: NO more weekend migraines/PM fogginess. They had become such an ingrained part of my life I barely even realized it was due to coffee until I finally quit.

Nice to hear this story! I had something similar around 5 years ago as well, a week or so before I didn't realize all the weekend headaches and fogginess were from lack of caffeine and finally put two and two together after sleeping for 12 hours after a night of no drinking and still feeling tired in the morning. later that afternoon I had a redbull and the fogginess went away. decided then I had to stop caffeine. basically found a quiet week and work and went cold turkey. still drink decaf tea and coffee, will save the coffee for important occasions (tolerance now is way down so I really feel them) good luck op!

I think there are 2 habits you will need to break.
1. Physical act of drinking something
2. Consumption of caffeine

To address #1 replace the coffee with something else to drink. Then for #2 consume something that you can use to gradually decrease the caffeine consumption.

For example, switch to tea, decaff coffee or even flavored water. Then add a specific, but slightly, reduced amount of caffeine into the drink. Decrease the amount of caffeine that you are adding over time until you aren't adding any at all.

Not sure if this is true, but I have also read that consuming caffeine before 9am tells your body not to produce certain hormones, which in turn makes you more tired later when the caffeine wears off because your body isn't producing some of it's natural stimulants. I'm sure I got some of the specifics wrong but I think you get the idea.

Switch to tea at first or start drinking de caf. Then once your uncontrollable rage caused by withdrawal ruins most of your meaningful relationships you’ll be free.

Why?

likefunnyuplifting

I mean... YOLO

The withdrawals are awful. This is 10x worse than quitting smoking...

The answer is within the question, quit drinking coffee, jut stop, don’t overthink it, just stop.

Disclaimer: Never been a coffee drinker.

Drink water and more water. Your liver and body will thank you at night when falling asleep and in 50 years.

I've done it a few times but always came back especially during busy season. if you are drinking multiple cups a day do not just stop drinking it's very painful. If you are drinking three cups, switch one for green tea. Do this for a couple of days, then switch 2 for green tea etc. With a mixture of green tea and a lot of water you'll eventually be able to get off. Staying off was always a problem for me. Good luck!

No not at all. It has some so makes the transition easier.

I quit Diet Coke cold turkey over 20 years ago, and started drinking more coffee. Now my goal is no coffee after noon, and just water until bed time. Not fun but I’m giving it a shot.

Still holding up pretty well. I’ll occasionally have an afternoon coffee but overall intake is way down.

1. Taper off
2. Drink water
3. Advil
4. Profit

Get the flu... you won’t know the difference between withdrawal and the flu symptoms. After about a week, no more coffee addiction!

Oh yeah... I said it as a joke, but only because I speak from experience 😂

Up to around 400mg caffeine has been approved as safe long term. Coffee itself even has some health benefits. Doesn’t mean everyone tolerates it the same though. Unless you are having some real adverse effects I would say there is no need.

I agree, coffee can be very healthy, and feels great. But, by definition, it is a chemical addiction. A caffeine addicted body won’t function naturally if it doesn’t receive caffeine for the day. Some people may not want the feeling of being “trapped” into an addictive habit.

Quit coffee over a vacation, or ween down over your next week of vacation. You feel the headaches a lot more when you’re trying to think than you do when you’re relaxing. Then just try to avoid as much as possible, and when you feel you need coffee, drink decaf (it still has a little caffeine, and you’ll really feel it if you haven’t had coffee for a while)

Currently talking to recruiters for a new job and it is honestly such a turnoff when they talk too much about having a strong company culture and/or talking about making sure I'm a good fit culturally. For me that borders on culty and is a red flag. I would much rather hear from a recruiter that a workplace's "culture" is that they are accepting of all cultures, diversity, and personality types.
