How do I reach more BIPOC designers? Let me start off by saying I identify as Latinx and I am not trying to tokenize anyone or to discriminate against white candidates. I’m looking to add to our design team and I’ve been really trying to add diversity to our company. Anytime we put out the word we’re looking for more senior design roles the majority of candidates are white males. I don’t want to shut talent out, I just want to make sure our opportunities are seen.

GD1 - by all means AD1 - we’re a web design agency. There’s no reason for candidates to be mostly white other than there being more white men in senior design roles (67% male and 73% white according to a website so you know it’s true) and while I will always hire the best candidate I want to make sure our positions are getting visibility. Thanks for your tips everyone!

@CD2 Yep. Surely there’s no way this would be something that is measured in 2021, and the most plausible explanation is that it must be made up. When’s the last time you hired someone who wasn’t a referral from one of your ‘bros’?

Some great resources to find BIPOC talent could be through some of these. MAIP (multicultural advertising internship program) or its alumni. Another resource is Where Are the Black Designers, Deloris.World

McKinsey has 42 new "affinity" APs... Of which only 3.5 are east Asian... Of which 1 is female. Ughh. McK won't include Asians in affinity week (recruiting events) and we're not included as an an option on the application... But they want to celebrate the 9 south Asian and 3.5 East Asian APs to get credit for dIvErSiTy eFfOrTs 🙄

Might be a paranoid mom question - my 16 month old is starting daycare next week. So far, I’ve had virtual interviews/meet and greet sessions with the daycare staff. Today we went in for our in-person orientation and I noticed that my child is the only non-white kid in his class of 8. Not entirely shocking, but in my head (and having seen pictures in their catalog) I was hoping there would be a little more diversity. Should I be worried about my kid feeling left out because he looks different?

Just want to put it out there: if you are a POC interviewing at a low-POC firm (esp in smaller markets), don’t be discouraged or judge on that alone. We are making huge efforts to increase diversity.

How would you suggest combating the “diversity hire” stereotype in your firm? A lot of managers at my firm don’t want to work with “diversity hires” because they think those people got a large advantage in the application process and aren’t as likely to be qualified as a result.

Not going into the details but I had a pretty terrible experience with a recruiter from another big 4 recently. I passed the initial SM level screening and the recruiter is supposed to setup interviews. They asked for time a week ago. But given how awful my conversation with the recruiter was I am wondering if I should ask them to schedule the next level interview at all. I’m worried that the recruiter will not be cooperative in the next stages of the interview. Any suggestions?
