Well, first you give up, which it looks like you’ve done
Snarky emails will still be there. Asshole clients. Federal sector wants all of this firm initiative and proposal work, on top of probably having at least an 1hr 15 min one way commute. You may probably be working the same hours. And on top of that, Federal agencies use software from the stone age. There is nothing innovative happening, policy and regulations make the feds wait for years before anything is implemented.
Lol send one email and it’s done. Federal is always begging for people from commercial
I actually enjoy federal consulting. You get to keep your commercial pay, but work solid 40 hour weeks. Don’t have issues with family because both my spouse and I are doing public sector consulting now. I’m home for dinner everyday. Still get to telework 1 day a week and my drive to client site is 15 minutes.
Yes the technology they use is out dated and the people are behind, but hey that only makes you seem all the more smarter.
@Dir1 tbh you couldn’t be more right 😂
TBH, I know nothing about Deloitte or Federal. This is what I’ve picked up from FB
Federal clients are the worst of the worst. You cant fire people in federal agencies, so the most terrible people end up being leaders. If they cant fire you, they will promote you just to get you out of there. Its a perpetual process, and these people will be your clients.
@OP before looking to transfer, get yourself on a Federal project and see if you like it. I am in federal and I enjoy the work and clients but ultimately it’s the same shit different day. Certainly no travel and generally shorter hours so it is good in that regard
Come on in, the waters fine.
I honestly don’t know that I can take another snarky client email, another delayed flight, another 12-14 hour day, another week away from my family... I am tempted to trade the brick-stupid client for the end of this nightmare.
If you've led an evil life OP, when it's all over you'll end up in fed consulting rather than heaven.
I like fed consulting too! Generally we still snark about clients but for the most part they are passionate about the mission of their agency and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the direct impact we can bring.
Just make sure you’re not doing staff aug. Or at least do staff aug that’s interesting and engaging and not just the M part of O&M
Otherwise - client culture really varies agency by agency. It’s really interesting to see how different they are and to get to hop between them has been a ton of fun.
I actually recently accepted a job offer in Deloitte fed
Seriously you don't want to come to public sector.
Assuming you can keep the Commercial pay, do it. The improved work / life balance alone is worth it. I’ve been looking at transferring to an internal role, as the past 9 years of the rat race has burned me out... and my personal life sucks lol..
Glad there are others who don’t mind fed consulting either! The hours are so good, pay is decent, and some projects really do have a huge impact above increasing profits. I also don’t mind being bored though, so if you’re one of those people that need a fidget spinner, fed consulting is probably not for you
Fed consulting is nothing like industry.
OP, you in the DC area? What’s your specialization?
D3 nailed it. I am so happy to be in commercial
Please don’t join federal unless you’re happy never making any more money and doing generic PM and IT work. Biggest mistake I’ve ever made and I’m struggling to get out
