Internship is one way of getting there. Does your company have an internal job portal or rotational program? Perhaps there is a job posting / rotation internally that is a software engineering role. That maybe a gateway to transition. A few of my colleagues transitioned this way without taking a pay cut (in their late 20s and early 30s as well). Good luck on the transition!

Short answer yes try to get an internship, but it really depends on the company that you are trying to get into.

Not necessarily a FAANG. Trying for smaller aerospace companies.

With lots of networking you should be able to get into a smaller company, specially if your background is in Aerospace. Let me know if you see anything on blue origin, I have a couple friends there.

Thanks!

Lots of articles online how to transition, i’d recommend building up a portfolio of projects like a personal website or repos on github, doesn’t have to be anything new or innovative just to show off your skills and what you’re interested in

Everything said here is good. I think you are on the right track and should have no problem making the transition. Engineer to software developer is a common pivot. One of my teammates has a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Compsci, and she is working as a software dev. For me, I just have a BS in Electrical Engineering but wanted to pivot to data analytics. I got hired to do EE work and switched to data analytics through my company's rotational program. Side projects helped. Pay was not affected.

I also have a friend from my school who was a Computer Engineering major, but because of his side projects and previous internship experience, he got hired at my company as a Data Scientist

Try to transfer internally or look for a transitional company. SWE at Boeing or spaceX sounds about right

I recommend looking for an internal transfer to a SWE position. Depending on the company you work at these positions are very hard to fill and they'll take just about anyone and train them. You might have to be willing to relocate though since not all locations feature SWE offices.
