Tbh cover letters are usually only read by recruiters. You need enough buzz words to make them think you’re qualified and move you to a screener interview

Totally agree. I’ve never submitted one. But I can see why you might want one to supplement, in which case use the same buzzwords or even the same phrasing as in the job post if accurate. Best bet is to get a referral honestly.

When is the right time to ask for a raise in salary? Nearing the end of my first year at current tech startup. We don’t have a formal process to request a merit or cost of living salary increase that I know of… there’s less then 15 people in our company. I made a big no no when joining the company and did not negotiate the salary before accepting. Should I informally chat about future compensation to my boss? Things are slow and my legal department is humming along fine - we’ve addressed reasonable risk, have a good grip on where the business stands on most contracting issues, no real liabilities or litigation, and everyone is just mostly happy with legal from management to sales to product. As a result, I don’t need to bother the CEO much, which led the CEO to miss 1:1s, and then demote me to reporting to an SVP which massively impacts my credibility and cuts me off from leadership-level meetings

Do you think I should try to get a job at a law firm and then try to go back in-house in 2-3 years? Or just try to switch companies to get better mentorship?
