How do one break into Construction law in the US? I have been working as a Quantity Surveyor / Contracts Administrator mainly dealing FIDIC contracts. I’ve experience dealing with claims - prolongation costs, loss and expense, EOTs, Suspension and Termination, claiming bonds etc. mainly drafting, negotiating, and administering contracts. And want to break into construction law in the US. I have a bachelor’s in civil engineering and a masters in construction economics. Any advice appreciated.

I’ve been there. I know QS’ and CEs’ who have successfully worked in the States.

So I am clear, you sound like you are not a solicitor, or a qualified lawyer in any capacity, and are not asking about how to be an attorney in the US (to my understanding). Instead, you are asking how to work in the US based on the skills you have. Is that correct?

Joining an American engineering or construction firm may be your best bet. You seem to already be in FG which is a tremendous multinational and may have opportunities to be placed in the US, so I’d start by asking internally. This is with the CE qualification.

Keep in mind most Americans will hear “construction law” and think you mean that you are a barred attorney.

I’ve been where you are, I think, and did end up working in the US, UK, and other countries. I’ll advise this though- if you can, try not to become too focused on a place. Focus on a skill. Become the best at what you do and you will get opportunities that reward you. Focusing on a place as a goal will drive you mad, IMO, as there’s too much outside of your control.

When you say “break into” what do you mean? Are you already an attorney?

Find a local construction organization that will likely have networking events or job resources. For example, I’m in the Central Florida area and there’s GOBA (Greater Orlando Builders Association) that offers these things. Most are at the county level or service multiple counties like the one I mentioned.
