How do options gains get taxed? Same as capital gains? Trying to learn more about options trading.

I believe they are treated the same as stocks. An option held >1 year is taxed as capital gains and an option held <1 year is taxed as ordinary income. I could be wrong.

Pretty sure some of them reduce your basis though. E.g. a covered call that is sold but not executed reduces your basis in the underlying so isn’t necessarily taxable in the year you receive the premium (I think - not an accountant and never want to be an accountant....)

MMED OP here, just sold a bit more than half my positions. I think it’s still got room to go, but personal circumstances say i should reduce some of my more volatile holdings (just crossed threshhold i wanted for downpyment on a new condo).

I’d suggest keeping some, but to tread w some caution. Official tally on this sale is 880% gain

What happened here? I refinanced my student loans in November 2019 and got a 10-year variable at ~2.5% pegged to LIBOR. When 2020 hit, LIBOR tanked and my interest rate went down to 0.75%. Looking at similar loans now, I can’t find anything close to this rate. Is this just a quirk of my original timing?

So my boyfriend said he has issues with me having student loans. I got my masters and bachelor's degree on my own because I come from a low income family. His father makes 300k and paid for all his education. According to my boyfriend he isn't sure if he could settle with me due to my debt. I owe 60k for my education and started my first year as a consultant making 83k, living with my parents to save and pay off my student loans. I don't have car debt or credit card. is his behavior normal?

I’m a little confused on the electric vehicle tax credit. I’m filling out Form 8936 and it appears to have a maximum credit of $2,500. However, I am reading that the maximum credit is $7,500 if your tax/AGI meet the criteria which it does in this case. What am I missing here? The form clearly shows $2,500 so where is the $7,500 coming from? Also, is there carryover to next year’s return if all of it isn’t use? Looks like maybe form 8834 if I’m reading it correctly?

Thank you.

This may be an elementary question, but my credit score just randomly dropped 20 points. I keep my utilization very low. Almost all of my financial transactions are on my credit card, and I pay everything off by each statement. One month I didn’t get a chance to pay everything off because there were some transactions made on my statement date that I was not able to pay off because they were listed as pending. This resulted in my utilization going up to 6%. My credit score did not change (cont).

Hi All! Just looking for some guidance.

I took a loan against my 401k and the repayment is drawn from my paycheck. Included in that payment is 6% interest.

I have enough money to repay the remaining balance of the loan. The question is: should I repay it now or just continue with the payment and pay off if I leave the company?

The money would go into savings / investments.

Thank you!

A lot of basic skilled labor can be worth learning and can really save you a lot of money. Most contractors in my area are often north of $100/hr for labor. I’ve often found the quality of my work to be better too. I think more folks shouldn’t be scared to get their hands dirty sometimes
