How do people deal with time on the bench or if you have little to no project work in the office to fill up the day?

I am a Medical Technologist with a degree in BS Medical Technology. I want to change my career to Business Analyst or Project Manager. I do not want to get another degree. Will coursera courses suffice? Any other tips?

Do y'all think being on the bench is under the control of a consultant? Is it leadership not selling enough or a reflection of your performance/skills?

However what im worried is after 2 years would interviewers expect me to have handled a project all alone and acted as a product owner. I have been in the same company from past 9 years, working as project manager with production team not client facing role. Now, I want to switch as my pay(16lpa) is very less as compare to people posting here.
