How do people stay fit while billing 70-80 hours a week? I’ve seen people get up at 6am every morning to work out no matter how late they wrap up work and go to bed the night before. Just how?

I’ve started going to orange theory so I can burn the most calories possible, 2-3 times/ week. It’s a lot more efficient and manageable for me than maintaining a light workout routine every day

like

I also do OTF! It’s the best thing I’ve done for myself - I started it around the time I started in big law. I’ve seen huge improvements in not just my physical health but my attitude as well. The one hour, in and out class just works for me. Plus, I have coworkers that do OTF and we get to bond over it 😊

If it’s important to you, make exercise a priority. It is non-negotiable for me and means many a 630am workout or nipping out for one before going back to work in the evening. Focuses your mind, and learning to set boundaries is good. Plus, being hot is great. You get used to being tired, but being tired when fit is better.

like

At a certain point, the benefits of exercise are far outweighed by the downsides of continuous sleep deprivation. I’m taking long term sleep less than 7 hours per night. But if you’re here for a good time, not a long time, then why not!

I go for a 3 mile run every morning. Takes all of 20 mins. If I ever reach the point where I don’t have 20 mins for that, I’ll know it’s time to go in-house.

like

The take-away is not run 3 miles lol. The take-away is take 20-30 mins in the morning to do a quick workout. If you’re schedule is that constrained that you cannot, I’m truly sorry, I would personally leave

like

They don’t. I gained 30 lbs in 5 years of busy biglaw. It’s tragic.

like

I quit but my new job is almost as bad and I’m pregnant now so I’ll have to wait sigh

I do a 20-45 minute peloton ride depending on the day. If I have time I’ll add a 10 minute core or weight workout. Of course there are days I skip (like leading up to a signing), but I can almost always find 30 minutes for exercise.

The health benefits to working out daily will give you more energy than it takes away. Don’t ask me how (much smarter people than me have written about it at length, just Google it) but it just does.

I have the same exact question. I feel like most just don’t stay fit. Some use performance enhancing drugs. Some are just very disciplined and handle stress well. Not sure there are other alternatives lol

Steroids.

I just try to eat super healthy because I very rarely exercise

My view is north of 60h its basically impossible unless exercise is like your only non work thing. But thats fine, you want a good routine for 40-50h weeks and if you fall a little off on the very bad weeks get back on track after

I workout daily. Mostly 6:30am for M-F. Later on the weekends. Also, have 2 small children. It’s doable. If I happen to have a really, really late night (i.e., past 1am), I push the workout to later in the morning/day.

like

A3, I get a reasonable amount of sleep. As I said, if I work super late, I push the workout later.

like

I’ll also add that having proper workout equipment at home has been a game changer. I never go to the gym.

Very true.

F45! Literally F45. 45 minute group workout that can be done in the morning

I do HIIT in the form of jump ropes. 10-15 minutes of that, 2-3x a week (so really not more than an hour a week). Add some calisthenics when I have time, plus a decently healthy diet (with some binge drinking and the occasional Big Mac) keeps me in shape.

How do you have the wherewithal to open your laptop and continue working? Ugh when I get home at 7/8 pm, I cannot bring myself to care. I can barely bring myself to show up/start working before 10 am also. Junior for context.

like

I used to workout for an hour every morning as a junior but that became unsustainable soon. What i found that works is: During the week I try to do 30min toning (think barre, pilates, yoga) every other day and eat healthy.. otherwise I get too sleepy in the evening to work! On weekends I do HIIT, weightlifting or tennis, which I hope cancels out the wine I drink…..

Same question. I will try do a workout class in the morning, but I end up being so exhausted by 8pm only to have to continue working until 1/2am.

You can’t under estimate that huge improvement a regular rush of endorphins has on your mental health. I try to get to the gym for an hour by 6 or 7 during the week, and on Saturday, I go in the morning. Like others have said, it is a game changer for nights I need to come back home and work. Regardless of the time you go, make it part of your routine and others will know/respect that. The occasional closing might require pushing it back to later in the evening but I seldom have to miss it entirely.

like

15-20 min work outs. That’s all you need. Make them intense.

like

Move to Miami. Body shaming is rampant here. That and plenty of pre-workout get me to the gym 5 times a week.

Hi everyone! I am moving onto a new project and team and was hoping to use this as an opportunity to self advocate for a 9am to 6pm work life. I understand that is not the norm for consulting but I really want a WLB. Would love to know what has worked for you to set strict boundaries and how you went about it without it coming off as someone being shy from their duties. Thanks! PS- I don’t have kids/ family in Canada to say that my priority is them and I can’t work beyond 6/6:30pm.

What does an N/A rating mean? I’ve been on STD leave most of the cycle for mental health issues and have worked a small portion of the cycle. Before going on leave I received feedback that I was in between CME and NI. I was really struggling in my newish role wfh especially as a new parent and my mental health in a very bad state during all of this. Can they put me on a PIP off of an NA rating once I’m back from my leave? Not sure what to expect. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Just wanted to post an update. 68 weeks ago I posted about my drinking problems. It was bad. It’s been 8 months now without a single drink. I still can’t believe it. I still miss drinking. I’ve sat with coworkers and watched them drink. It’s not nearly as fun, but I am so thankful each morning I can hold my head up high. Will I drink again? I only said I would quit for 60 days. Can I have a beer? Some wine? A fine bourbon? I sometimes crave it. I guess there is the answer! You can all do this!
