How do true solos organize their days? I’m finding myself constantly on my heels instead of my toes and would like to hear some examples of how you lay out your days, time for admin, accounting, marketing, new clients, actual work, etc. Anyone have a great system that works really well?

I’m in a similar boat. Just started a partnership and we find ourselves having to handle administrative duties most of the day. It’s distracting, but the things must be done. Our business is brand new, so we’re having to do things like fix the phone system, website, google ads…..

My plan for next week is to handle all “new client” meetings and administrative issues in the morning, and handle all billable legal work in the afternoons. For our business model, we each only need to bill 2-3 hours/day to meet our salary goals. Fingers crossed.

Block out time for admin, marketing, and substantive work. If you are just getting an office up and running that takes more admin time than you will hopefully need once everything is up and running.

Also, if there are more than one of you then switch off days where you handle admin things so you can have an admin day and then a fully substantive day.

Generally marketing is only an hour each day for me, and I do it at the end after I’ve done actual legal work. Accounting only needs to be done once a month to reconcile your books or weekly if you really want to be on top of it. Admin you take it as it comes up- can’t stop the phone from ringing and someone needs to answer it. Summer is coming up so look into interns to help with some of the legal and you can teach them some admin like filing

Do you briefly mind going over the marketing component (i.e. what you on daily basis)? Thanks

Thanks!!!

Anyone else out there feel like they’re both 1. working harder and for longer hours than ever but also 2. about to be laid off regardless, given the looming economic constraint.

16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.

Hey I'm a solo Attorney who does business law. Until now I've never litigated. However, it is something I would like to start doing. Does anyone have any advice on what to read or look to in order to be as prepared as possible. CA attorney if that helps. Thank you in advance.

Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? For context, I’m a new associate at a class action firm where there’s ample opportunity to do substantive work & pursue your own case ideas from the get go. Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.

Question re: salary. I’m thinking about accepting an offer at a small (4-6 attorneys) transactional firm. I would primarily be working on NDAs for clients. The role sounds great (no billable hours, fully remote, flexible hours/ can work from anywhere); however, the salary is $70K. I’m a new attorney, with only one year of experience. Does this salary seem low? If so, any advice on what someone in my position should ask for?

Any suggestions for an organizational/organization expert, coach, or someone that helps with getting firms organized? We need to be more efficient and have better systems in place.

I’ve now reached the point in my career where I have the experience, a good client base, and consistent referral sources that I’m ready to leave the small firm I’m with and start my own practice. My preference would be to find a partner and form a partnership because I’d like to have someone to bounce ideas off of and for some social interaction, but if I can’t find the right partner, then I’ll do it alone. Any advice on branching off to start my own firm - whether it be solo or with a partner?
