Send note a few days before your vacation that you’ll be OOO. Turn on OOO, leave on vacation, don’t answer your phone or email, deal with mess when you get back

It took this happening one time for me to realize that I was never doing it again. They are all adults and if they can’t figure it out let the thing burn to the ground. What if you got hit by a bus? They’re calling you because it’s easy and they’re disrespectful. After all, they aren’t ruining their vacation so what do they care.

I would NOT use PTO for hours worked. Period. Bill those hours to the client.

I always make it clear that weekends and vacations are my time unless notified in advance I need to work or be on call. And when I'm off, I just dont answer the phone or email until I'm back to the office.

I mever take my work laptop with me on true PTO. Sounds like a new project and team may be in order.

Talk to your manager about this. Unless you’ve said clearly that you are available while you’re away, your colleagues should respect your time off. Your manager (or his/her manager, if yours was the one who interrupted you) should be aware that it happened and the person responsible should be reprimanded.

I had to work once while I was on vacation overseas. My mistake for taking my laptop with me. I worked opposite hours of the day and charged all the hours I worked and didn’t take PTO for that time. After that, I never took my laptop with me again!

like

This has happened several times to me. Each time I’ve told my managers that the project need to reimburse me for the hotel (if there was one) and the original cost of the flight, change fee, and future difference in fare when I rebook the flight. I’ve never been told no when making this request

I make it a point to take separate vacations from my phone and laptop

I used to take my laptop with me and work periodically while away. Initially, I didn't mind it too much - hanging on a beach do some work... Not too bad. Recently however, I took my laptop because I had a few last minute things to get done - I completed them, and then went off-grid - I came back energized and truly refreshed... The shitshow was still waiting for me when I got back...

I have an out of office alert on my email signature 2-3 weeks out alerting to my vacation.

I had out of office and sent reminders before I left. One guy called me on my cell someone gave to him, I specifically said I am on vacation, he said can u get back with me before friday? I was thinking am I speaking english or is he deaf Dont think anyone gave a damn. I will not be using that time as pto . Came back more tired than I left

I had multiple mediations recently. I do management side employment law. Overall I’m walking away feeling like what the heck are we paying the mediators for? I’m tired of the mediators saying they don’t want to hear about the merits of the case. The merits are DIRECTLY tied to the amount of settlement authority I have. I feel like our clients are getting worked way more than the plaintiffs side. Also plaintiffs have followed up every single settlement with “can we get the funds before holiday?”

But you told me you were doing all this stuff and since you are a midlevel and generally good at your job, I believed it was getting done. You should have either finished all of it (talking about stuff you said you were handling a month ago) and/or sent me a clear email saying “I didn’t have time to handle XYZ if you could take over”. I can’t micromanage everything. 🙏🏽
