As a minority who cannot count the amount of times I’ve gotten casting videos that were 95+% white, I’d say no, it’s not counterproductive.
As a POC client, I agree
This is one thing I’m proud of our brand for; we only cast our first white person for a shoot a few months ago. Until then, we’d been 100% people of color. We intend to keep casting BIPOC only for the foreseeable future.

I don’t have any objections to what I’ve heard referred as the Benetton ad approach to casting. It’s nice to see big brands wanting to market their wares to everyone. Aspiring actors of color can finally go on casting calls and get some practice if not some college money. That means a lot because as a kid and POC who did attended those castings, there were so few and when they did come around it was always for a ‘street’ feeling character. Now, it’s also equally important for Ad people to know that POCs are not just differently melanin’d versions of white people and write copy accordingly.
