How do women in consulting with kids do it?! Mostly asking about the travel component. My SO and I are both in consulting. He will not switch industries if we have kids and will always be required to travel

I quit traveling; tried to stay local for a while then went internal. My firm has internal roles that are more practice-like in terms of comp and work. Also specialist roles that still face clients but travel for specific needs. Going internal is not necessarily just like going to work in HR, or training, or accounts payable.

They were not on this path. We need more women at the top...

I am moving to big4 and taking implementation management type roles got the next few years to keep me in the same location and reduced hours. Illl still be building consulting skills and network, but with the ability to spend time with my kids. My husband also works in consulting and has for the same. We decided we weren’t personally comfortable to sacrifice time with the kids for our careers. But I’ve seen other do it. Most women leadership in my company either negotiated (senior level) for non-travel role and adjusted industry to accomodate or their husband stepped back and stayed home

Yeah. I ma trying to leave big 4 too and move to tech now that I am pregnant. I am unable to handle 10 to 12 hour days too 🙈

Based on what you said, it looks like compromising is your issue. He seems to want to figure out a solution by moving, but that seems like a firm no from you cause of family. I get why he’s willing to change locations but not jobs in that he still needs a paycheck and going outside your industry can make finding a job harder. I’m curious what you are willing to compromise on though. You don’t want to move, but it seems like you do t want to change jobs either?!

Or move to NYC?

We are both in consulting and expecting our first. Thoughts are as follows from years of planning for this and what we heard from others: Switch weeks for travel Family nearby Nanny Daycare + Nanny Firm “no” to working outside hours Make a schedule with your SO for days / nights for work and no work Selective on clients (ie not traveling to places hard to get to or super far) I’ve seen some PMDs being their kids with them and then have a nanny in travel city. No firm initiatives Going internal for a few years

We moved to the city where my husbands HQ is and I took projects that have minimal travel, once a month or once a quarter. The bottom line is one of you needs to work where you live.

like

Dang. I guess I should have done consulting - I avoided it because of the travel. What is your practice area?

Why won’t he switch?

It sounds like he’s making the sacrifice to be in the location you want.

I travel and will be going back in a few weeks (on maternity leave right now). I will be working from home the majority of the time and when I travel my mil will be watching the baby until my husband gets home from work.

A colleague and her husband both traveled every week. They moved grandparents in to live with them. We live with my parents too. I would not feel comfortable leaving my kids overnight with paid nannies.

like

Lol comprehension. D4 is talking about a colleague, but go off.

I am pregnant right now and moving to amazon in a month. I don't think I will travel with kids. It's messy without travel itself plus I hate consulting anyways

Honestly Deloitte had best maternity benefits

Update. We broke up after 4 years. We were about to get engaged and needed to seriously talk future visions and logistics. Thank you for all the feedback! Unfortunately this post made me realize there is no desirable solution. If we get more updates on the future of work travel model being less than a non-Covid 80% then he and I will revisit the conversations. Sucks and am devastated but I just don’t think any of the realistic options are for me…

You won’t want to travel as much once you have kids. Being away from them is the worst. And you don’t have to travel to stay in consulting and you don’t have to take a step back in your career either 🙋🏻‍♀️

I'm non-confrontational so instead telling her i find her difficult/annoying, I just stopped inviting her/avoid trips/added a lil more distance. But she doesn't get it..-contd

I have 10 days (inclusive of travel days) to do something at the end of October. For once I am stumped on where to go. Any ideas? Prefer international, late 20s/early 30s couple, not partiers, quite open minded. Really our only constraint is neither of us drive much so not keen on a trip that is best done with a rental car/lots of driving.
