How do y'all deal with mental health at work? Especially for anyone else with a formal diagnosis--do you get/have you asked for accommodations? I want to ask for *something* but I'm not sure what's reasonable, and I don't want to come off as incapable even though I have a long tenure at my company (5yo startup, I've been here 3). I used to just deal with it as an IC, but I recently started doing managerial work and my "I'll catch up later" strategy is becoming increasingly unsustainable.

My work is very supportive about mental health days and WLB. My previous company made me feel guilty for taking any time off and even considering WLB and I thought that was normal for the longest time. It shouldn't be.

Do you have a good relationship with your own manager? If so, I'd approach them first. If not, speak to HR. Most companies offer support and accommodations for mental health needs - especially if you have a formal diagnosis to back it up. I wouldn't worry too much about how you'll be perceived. You've obviously been capable of working your way up the ranks into a management role and they really can't discriminate based on health anyway.

Hey OP, I 100% hear you. My younger brother dealt with severe mental health issues that interrupted him from being able to live a normal life for a while. I think what I saw that really worked was having constant communication with those he was working with. being as transeprent as possible without oversharing and letting people know that he was doing his best, given the circumstances, The stigma around MH is drastically changing and people are taking more seriously now than ever before. I think you would do great to just let them know what your status is and ask for a plan to help you be productive while keeping your MH first.

Metal health is becoming much more commonly discussed which is great. I think it's perfectly fine to let your manager or HR know that you are dealing with mental health problems. You don't have to go into extreme detail to be accommodated either. Only share what you're comfortable with. I had a mental health crisis earlier this year and I had to take a week off of work at the last minute. They were extremely understanding and supportive. At the end of the day everyone understands that your health and overall wellness is a priority.

I would reach out to your HR. They're the best place to start. they can offer information on the kind of accommodations that are commonly done and what they can do.

I've had similar issues. Personally, my first stop was my supervisor because we had a better relationship. If you've been around for awhile, they know you now and what you're capable of so it's an easier convo in some ways. You can ask for accommodations and most companies are reasonable enough to allow it. Better to do it now then to get a point where things are too much and you can't catch up. They won't know if you don't tell them!
