How do y’all quiet the noise in your head that’s telling yourself “they’re only interviewing me to check off the diversity box”? Heading into another round for a VP role that I feel unqualified for. It’s hard to not think this is the classic Rooney Rule at play. Would love any tips.

Ask who the three highest-ranking BIPOC are at the place, and what their job duties are. If it’s VP of Diversity, Receptionist and Janitor, that tells you what the internal culture is like and how much work, if hired, you’ll have to do to change it.

There are many white men who are interviewed for roles they are unqualified for. A famous study shows that women apply for jobs when they have 100% of the qualifications/experience, and men it’s 60%. IF you actually are unqualified for it, congratulations you won! You are behaving and being seen like many white men. I actually doubt you are unqualified for it. At this point for the interview, they just want you to give them reasons to like you even more. They WANT diversity (selfishly it will make their lives easier) so make it easy for them to choose you! And if it doesn’t work out, be thankful you didn’t get warped in a culture that doesn’t value what you bring to the table. I got rejected by a famous company i wasn’t a fan of (many white men who made me feel a bit awkward) to get in another one I freaking love.

I think the bigger issue here is that you feel “unqualified for” the job and that’s making you hear noises. If I were you, if this job is really what you want, put on a heavy arm of confidence armour on you and go for it. You will get THIS job. Say it after me, “I will get this job!” You’ll learn what you need to know and stretch yourself. You’ll feel like you’ve achieved something when you get on the other side of not feeling qualified. If that noise in your head come up again, squat it like you’d do to a fly.

I ask to speak to someone who heads up DEI so I can better understand the progress they’ve made and vision they have for the future. I typically do this when I’m pretty far along in the process or right before I accept an offer. You can also ask to talk to a POC around your level who can speak more intimately about their experience. Depending the size of the company, it’d definitely be a red flag if they can’t find anyone to talk to you or try to steer you away from having this conversation. You can also be direct and ask why there were no POC who were a part of the hiring team and if that’s not something the company sees as being important. You’re not really looking for an explanation because nothing you hear will justify it but what you are looking for is the level of receptivity they have to the requests and how quickly they can fulfill them.

Don't stop going for what u want! Also- consider it practice if that is the case. I have been called in to very technical interviews simply to align with corporate policy to add a PoC to the interview process. Its kind of humiliating but I tried to focus on the positive for myself at the time. It says alot about them if they are doing that but u wouldnt want to work for them anyway. The job u want is one that values your skills and its out there!

Also tell that voice that you don’t care about someone else’s intention. Do you believe you can do the job? Do you want it? Go in there and show them what’s up! I believe I’ve come across interviews because they were checking the box, and I won’t lie, I take satisfaction in blowing the interview out of the water and doing my flex. I may have some bitterness, but I believe there are people who are always going to try to put you in a box throughout your career because it serves their small minds. “No one puts baby in the corner.”

I know that I haven't been considered for opportunities far more than I'll ever be handed anything (even interviews) You belong!
