Start by doing your job. Being worried about climbing before starting is not going to get you there faster
You don’t want to, it’s a living hell. You know how much it sucks to do a job traditionally done by someone with 2+ years of exp as someone with 4 months? I’ll tell you right now, it’s awful. No support, constant stress. You have to do your job + the persons you are covering for. “Acting” as the position above you is just a kool aid way of saying we don’t have anyone else so have fun. God I don’t want to work tommorow
Have the answers people are looking for. Be the person that other people go to because they say to themselves "____ will know". If you don't know, find out and share...and then you'll both know. Basically, learn and share knowledge and elevate those around you however you can.

Understand what an SA is responsible for, learn it, and start doing that.
There is likely a documented career framework at your firm that outlines what success looks like in every dimension you are assessed in for performance reviews.
Find this and know your way around it - you'll need it for every subsequent promotion.
Dive in head first and learn absolutely everything you can. Currently going through the same thing, so I just became a sponge and soaked everything up lol
In my personal experience at Big Four in the past, good Senior Associates rarely need supervision. If you know how to handle yourself in front of customers and you can handle all tasks with minimal supervision, I think it’s safe to start having those conversations.
Sorry Ive been saying customer instead of clients since leaving consulting, but you know what I mean… just get sh*t done with no supervision, then you have a business case to get promoted to senior.

Start by doing your job, knowing every single detail inside and out, and how to connect the dots. Learn the entire flow of the company, not just your job. Learn what others contribute and why/how it impacts your role. Be curious and become knowledgeable on the why and how vs just what you’re doing.
Others have hit the nail on the head. Kudos for the motivation, but folks will see right through the BS of “acting” vs “doing.”
Best advice I received was: clients come back to us because we do great work.
Relationships help but if you can’t deliver then clients will go else where.
So, do great work and everything else will fall into place. Also build your network and work on your soft skills if you think it’s subpar.
You’ll get there when you get there. But there are a few things you can start doing now:
- See and understand the big picture, end to end processes of your projects
- Seek to understand the why of everything you do (not just the what) and ask lots of questions to do so
- Seek to provide go-forward recommendations and timing/level of effort implications for every key decision point or question you have. Listen carefully to why your SA/M approves or rejects your recommendations and adjust going forward
- Take super detailed notes and catalog all action items; if an action item is falling through the cracks, remind the SA/M of it
- If you disagree with another A on something, don’t just argue — talk until you understand each other’s approach, and then elevate the pros/cons of each to your SA/M
- Keep your eye out for mistakes your project team makes now, before you have SA/M type accountability
You won’t get there right away, but if you’re willing to put in the work, things will eventually click. For now, enjoy the opportunity to learn. Make lots friends, stay as genuine and true to yourself as you can, focus on providing good work products for your clients, and it will all work out
Ask your direct supervisor what the requirements are for a promotion and follow that model
