How do you all deal with a roommate who won’t compromise on anything and has a low budget while apartment hunting?

Please do yourself a favor and stop looking with them. Those are all red flags and likely will be a nightmare in the future.

like

It's not really fair to ask them to pay more than they are comfortable paying. Are you also having to make compromises or do you only expect them to make the compromises?

like

Agree with others. Save the friendship, do yourselves both a favor and find other roommates. If you don’t see eye to eye on budget now, you’ll have way more arguments about furnishings, utilities, etc. down the line.

like

Or just say you want to live alone! And keep the friendship and avoid the roommate drama....

Get out now. I had a similar roommate who was cheap but high maintenance. She ended up arguing we didn’t need to heat or cool our apt, so If I ever touched on the thermostat the whole bill was mine to pay. It wasn’t fun.

like

Don’t room with them. They’ll likely make you pay a higher rent so they can keep the amenities they’re looking for at the price point they want. Had a roommate do the same thing. We are now ex-roommates because they were so cheap

like

You make a good point, thanks for that perspective

like

So this roommate needs a modern bathroom, natural light, washer dryer in unit, a doorman, closets in both rooms all for $1400

like

I live in Jersey City and my building is doing a couple of months free and I’m sure you can negotiate to the price you want! I renewed 2 years ago and I didn’t have to lift a finger to negotiate. They really value their tenants.

How low of a budget do they have?

$1400

What neighborhoods are you looking at? They will probably just need to take the smaller room if they’re being that particular. Are you both willing to split rent proportionally to room size?

Find a new roommate or move to the Outer Boroughs

Live alone and save yourself all the headaches. Wish I had chosen differently

Take the big room

My company contracts a web developer, we have a set amount of hours for the quarter and pay over if more work is needed.
He never gets anything done. Doesn’t answer emails half the time. The one thing he’s done was take out a blurb that threatened our eligibility for patent renewal.
We have another company taking over in January, but I still have some pretty important dev needs until then and I can’t get him to do a thing. I truly try to give him all he needs.

After a few mos, I’m missing the projects and sense of accomplishment, also the environment and people. I have the opportunity to go back to that sort of work again, but I don’t know

I am relatively new at my in-house position on a very small legal team and have realized that all of our organization’s policies/procedures are very poorly written. My boss, the GC, clearly drafted many of them (she is not a great writer, unfortunately). Has anyone here done a complete overhaul of P&Ps or does this seem like more of a gradual project, improving on policies ad hoc as they are updated? Also, any advice on suggesting edits/dealing with a boss who’s a bad writer?

I got a decent deal on a small 1 bed in a luxury building (hell’s kitc). Should I do a 12 month lease or 24m?

Got the rent negotiated to under 3k + free amenities for a year (gym, pool, etc.). I’m afraid rent will atleast go back to the original price (+5%) and then some. The building has some sort of rent control but that’s predicted to go away in less than 1 year as per the lease. The legal rent limit is way higher.

Would love some perspective on renewal experience after 1 year. TIA.
