Why does DMA keep on bringing up race?

What’s the LA scene like?
Asking for a friend.
Oh God. The hell with them. I’ve had good breaks so I have a lot more than most people in the bank and in retirement and in a great house. But I drive an ok car and have no desire to waste money on status symbols. Don’t get sucked in to that noise. Be smart w your money and secure enough in your ego not to go along with that.
It only matters insomuch of how much weight you give it. I’ve worked with clients like that while I was making 47K and living in a shithole trying to make ends meet. They still respected me and my work. I now make nearly triple that and yes, indulge once in awhile, but if people have been paying attention to my possessions I have not noticed because I don’t care. Do good work with a good attitude and no one really gives a fuck, in my experience.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS^^^^^^^^^^ we know from research in this area that those types of external motivations and superficial attributes are NOT indicative of good leadership, effective results, and enduring retention and relationships. Follow your gut and be whomever you are authentically. If that involves a fancy car or certain clothes that’s totally fine as long as it’s because it’s something YOU want and that brings you joy. If it’s not your thing or where you’d chose to spend your time and money, then don’t do it just to fit in with others. And, if doing that limits your career advancement, you are DEFINITELY not in the right workplace. I love the diversity of thought, expression, and insights in our office and wouldn’t have it any other way!!
They are insecure with themselves- don’t fall into the trap.
Status symbols are tacky.
It depends. Is it keeping up with the Joneses or just looking good in the work place?
I’m typically anti social expectations to an extreme but in the workplace it’s part of the game. I associate it with presentation.
Having drive correlates with performance unless it’s all theater. Relationships are important but I think you should draw a line on what your willing to do. Dropping a ton of money on work clothes is counterproductive to working but you should look sharp even on a budget. I’m upfront about family and work ethics but avoid sharing any values around politics or religion.
This is a competitive industry.
You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money to look stylish. Thrifting and tailoring go a long way. I have personally found that paying attention to self presentation does matter at work.
