How do you all keep up with your mental health in this industry? I’m feeling emotionally drained, stressed and lots of social anxiety. So much that I don’t want to do anything but sleep on weekend

Counseling really helps. Also making sure you don’t get your self worth from the status of your current role, awards and the praise of your bosses. I think too often in advertising our job has the highest of stakes, but really, there are many more important things in life. Focus on your personal life, see your friends, call your mom, dad, and if you have a SO, take 'em out for a nice date :)

I stopped drinking 2 years ago. I keep my house clean, which keeps me sane when I’d otherwise be a ball of stress. I also got a pet.

Find your “thing” outside of this industry. What gets you excited? Go do that. Rebalance and establish boundaries.

therapy forever

likefunny

Yeah therapy is a huge one for me. I also sign up for work out classes at 5:15 or 5:30 so I make myself leave work at a decent time and have a good break before going back into my projects.

Meditation really really helps. And plans like going to the movies, museums, etc just to get out of the house so you’re not just there thinking about that idea that got away or work in general

like

Exercise. I try to lift 4-5 times a week - I find that working towards a goal at the gym that I'm fully in control of helps me stay sane when I feel like I have no control over what happens in the office. I always leave feeling productive - like I actually accomplished something, which is a feeling I rarely experience at work.

Stop taking it so seriously. We’re not doctors, fire fighters or police officers. It’s only advertising, nobody is gonna die if you miss a deadline. Accept that and you will be able to do a better job because the anxiety will be gone.

No offense but that advice doesn’t really work. If you are feeling as drained as this person made it seem, telling them this isn’t saving lives is never going to help.

like

I find I never have time for those things. Not fair to keep the pet home alone. And miss all my therapy for newly immediate deadlines. Would love advice too

Thank you all for your kind words and suggestions! I think a lot of my problems stem from the constant need to communicate, the office politics and hierarchy of communication, as well as being good at speaking your opinion/presenting and sticking up for ideas. I think it just takes a lot of social energy out of me that I’m not used to.. I’m an introvert so the energy it takes really makes it tough to do other things on the weekend because I feel so drained. I think finding other outlets (gym, pets, groups, therapy, etc) and other ways to recharge are great ideas! I don’t think it means I have to leave advertising all together but this is growing period and maybe I’m not cut out for a big agency and should look for smaller tight knit group or find other ways to stay creative where I don’t have to deal with constant social pressures all of the time. Thank you all, this helps!

I like to think advertising is like the Allegory of the Cave. You've been trained and shackled this whole time to only one perspective. You put blood, sweat and tears into this and so did everyone else. Heck you've gotten so deep in that you have no time to observe and enjoy the rest of the world. Everyone around you is shouting about how great you are in the office. Or maybe it's actually toxic. Then you break off those chains one day and realize there's actually things out there that are much more exciting than sitting in a cubicle. Try to look around. As others said, advertising isn't that serious. The day you retire from it and step out into the world, you realized that nobody actually cared as much as you really made it up to be. I'm not trying to make this seem like a negative thing but my point is there's more in life than spending your time trying to please someone else in hopes of a bigger paycheck to please someone bigger for an even fatter paycheck. Step out for a bit and then step back in. Get a bigger picture of what you actually are happy with in 10 years.

The pet it’s a great idea. But if you are all the time out and your pet is alone. It’s not fear also. Personally find that sport it’s a great idea you can use any spare time or join a gym near your workokace. Between too much work and bad food its a great form to realease anger and stress...good luck Sorry for my bad english 😓

No job is worth making you feel mentally drained, anxious and terrible all the time. Leave the job and/or industry and design your new future path exactly the way you envision it.

Try EMDR, and if insurance won’t cover, try EFT (YouTube). Research shows EFT is nearly as effective as EMDR. Another effective tool is Transcendental Meditation. You’d be surprised by the number of top CCOs and ECDs who practice TM. Wishing you well

I smoke, cry when I need to, vent to colleagues, go to therapy.

Mental health scenario: I’m usually an in control person but when a coworker screws me over or leaves me hanging I get extremely anxious and can’t help but fixate on the negative feelings towards that person. Even though I can handle the work product and can salvage the situation under pressure just fine, I can’t shake the obsession over that person hanging me out to dry… I thought this was normal but now I’m wondering if it’s something else? Anxiety and ocd maybe?

Am I off base to think that missing 3 work days is too much to expect of people for a bachelorette party?
