How do you all split your finances with your spouse/live-in partner? I'm looking to take a job that's more than double my partner's income and we decided to split it proportionally (so she pays say around 30% and I'd pay 70%). I'm curious to see how others worked this one out

This has been asked so many time and there will be a lot of opinions and arrangements depending on people’s particular circumstances.

I think being married vs engaged vs in a relationship will impact how people view things his as well, I would be fine splitting proportionately with a husband but probably not a bf I dated for a year, I would rather go 50/50.

I for example make more than double my bf, but we split 50/50 (I pick up more of the meals and drinks out). I was getting my PhD so I started working 4 years after him and need time to get more savings. If we split it proportionally, I would never catch up to him. If we get married, I would likely care less and probably just have a mutual bank account (chase sapphire is too expensive to pay for two lol)

Long story short, no right answer, do whatever you guys think it’s right for you given your particular circumstances.

like

Yeah exactly, I like having mutual money when married with kids so no person feels like they have to ask for permission to get the basics

If it’s your spouse then my recommendation would be to join everything, otherwise what’s the point of being married if you cannot trust with the finances. 🤷‍♂️

like

We split rent proportionally and everything else 50/50 ish (mostly because it's easier with variable costs). Admittedly, I do pick up more of our going out costs than she does, because I feel bad about how much she makes (she's very underpaid).

When I was married we had our own separate accounts and then a joint savings and checking. We each put half our paycheck in a joint account. All bills came out of that. She made a bit more than I did at the time so of course she paid more. We never once had a money fight. Never once missed a bill. What was left over each month was put into savings. Dinners/ fun activities were usually paid by one or the other. If we had more left over than usual in our joint account, we'd treat ourselves to something nice.

If I wanted to blow the other half of my income on guns or toys, she didn't care. If she wanted to blow her other half on shopping or whatever girls buy, I didn't care. Gifts for each other were out of our own separate accounts. Bills always got paid and we (almost) always had a bit left over.

Couldn't have asked for a better financial relationship. Everything else didn't work out, but money was never a problem.

When we were living together and renting, we split 50/50. Now that we’re engaged and own our home, it’s based on income (I make ~35% of HHI). Once we’re married, we’re combining finances

We split 50/50 - but aren’t super precise about it. At the end of the year we take a look at our split for the prior 12 months and if things aren’t roughly equal, then we readjust. (Usually, that means the person who paid disproportionately less the prior year pays the first couple of months of rent for the new year)

For all these beaten down growth stocks if you are thinking of buying shares would it be worth it here just to buy a leap instead of shares and let it ride. I’m sure some of these stocks will never recover so even if the leap goes to zero wouldn’t it be close to the same loss as if you had shares and it keeps dropping in the next year. See PTON, PINS, DKNG, PLTR, PYPL and V(lesser extent) etc. I haven’t done leaps before and just trying to learn how best to use it as a replacement for shares

My 16 year old just got his license. Someone was telling me to buy him an insurance friendly car (essentially nothing fancy or highly desirable for thieves) car and just insure him on that car and not on my car or my wife’s car (both of our cars I would consider premium vehicles). Any comments on this strategy or other strategy to keep insurance costs low? I’m hearing horror stories about doubling and tripling premiums from other parents.

My wife failed a tenancy referencing on the grounds of employment and pay because she is on mat leave. We have more than sufficient savings to cover rent for the whole year and yet she failed and the reason they stated is ‘we are not sure she will return back to work after X month’. Isn’t that discriminatory in nature and worth a legal fight? Worth adding she is getting full pay for 6 months, goes back to work after 8 months and the 7/8 month pay is only statutory of £650.

Managing attorneys in small firms - how much do you make?

I'm in South Florida. Currently a 6 year associate at a small firm (~12 attorneys, 55 staff). Making a move towards Managing Attorney position that they are considering hiring from outside the firm for. I'm going to make the case that they should promote from within and give me the position. I'm objectively a good candidate for it. Question is... what's a good salary for that position? What do you make? Thanks.

Is it fraud or somehow bad to just start and quit a 2nd job every 1-2 months once you actually start to have to do real work? The first few weeks of most jobs tend to be pretty low stress and an easy paycheck or 2. And if you only do this at employers you wouldn't return to, is there a downside?

Help - want to propose to the GF soon. I wanna buy a nice ring possibly as a surprise, but have no clue about the steps of this thing. What's the proper sequence (this is my first guess).

1. Ask her parents
2. Discuss about the ring/stone etc?
3. Buy the actual ring
4. Plan a surprise proposal

For added context, we already discussed the wedding and also possibly going for lab diamonds.

TIA for your help 🙏
