How do you all think remote working is influencing gender dynamics in your teams? I wonder if/how relying on virtual comms with no in-person interactions will help or hurt things.

Continued: For example, it is harder to build connections with leadership and find mentors. But it might be easier for people who are more junior and less confident to speak up in virtual vs. in-person meetings. Personally, I feel like I’m interrupted less frequently when our whole team is on video calls. I had a few today where I finally felt able to fully express myself without fighting for space. What are you experiencing?

Honestly it’s been a struggle for me. I generally struggle with speaking with strength/power. I think in person my professionalism shines through other channels of presence which help make up for this. On virtual calls, I’ve already been asked by my MD twice if I’m okay, sick, told my voice sounds soft... :(

Fair point and I get that. If it helps, my video conference speaking skills have definitely improved over time and I still have similar struggles. It is a matter of practice. Plus most people are not used to doing this a full-time basis. We’re all figuring things out.

On my calls, it is harder for dudes to randomly interrupt because they have to unmute themselves to do it and can’t use physical cues to take control of the conversation. It feels like I can finish a thought and get my point across. Plus— when we are on video, we can all peak into each other’s homes and that helps to humanize everyone. Pets, hobbies, kids, etc are all more obvious and it has chilled everyone out just a bit.

Wow interesting perspective that i didn’t consider. I’ve definitely felt more comfortable virtually because I️ feel like I️ have the floor. I feel like it’s also easier to listen because you don’t have to worry about your facial expression etc.. it might be harder to build connections, but it’s still appropriate to reach out to leadership/mentors and ask their thoughts with the current situation, or even just to check in. I️ feel a slight disadvantage while traveling because it can seem awkward asking for one-on-ones for personal development while on site. But now people have more time during the day and seem more empathic to concerns. I️ feel like virtual is a positive if you feel comfortable reaching out to individuals on your team

With all this extra, often unnecessary, communication while my company works remote, I’ve been having an awful time getting actual work done. So I’ve started to block off major chunks of my day every morning and put up an autorespond message saying I’m focusing on a deliverable, but will be available to respond at x time and if it’s an emergency to text. HOLY SHIT. What a game changer. I can actually get work done guilt free. I realize not everyone is able to do this, but if you can, do it.

M here. I’ve done a lot therapy and reflection and realized I grew up believing in traditional gender roles. Although I logically believe in equality, I find myself desiring a traditional “wife stays at home and tends to the house” life. I’m ashamed of it, especially since my SO is a strong, intelligent, highly independent woman who likes to work, and I wouldn’t want to change anything about her.
