How do you approach being recruited when you’re happy where you are? Worried that my forward mobility might be on hold due to COVID so I should look elsewhere, but also love my current company and don’t want to leave any opportunity here on the table.

Take every call, always. You never know when that call might lead to your dream job down the line. It’s never a bad move to network - even when you’re happy.

like

Thank them for reaching out. Explain that you’re happy in your current role but open to learning more. Set expectations and use it as an opportunity to build a relationship.

like

Take every single call. See where it goes. And you can always politely decline at any time. The worst-case scenario should be you had interesting conversations and met new people.

I know it can feel wrong to talk to other agencies. But it isn’t. Make more connections. Impress more people. Learn your value.

like

Explain you’re super interested in staying in touch, but you have immediate opportunities comin up that you hope to learn from, that you haven’t quite checked your list of things to complete that will in turn make you a stronger candidate. Pointedly ask if it’s ok for you to reach back out in the future once you’ve had the benefit of these opportunities.

This is absolutely great advice for when you’re further and more senior in your career, but not necessarily the best advice for the situation OP outlined.

OP, if you’re curious about the role and worried about your advancement and/or opportunities in the future at your current place of employment, *always take the call*. Again, it might reinforce that you’re very happy and fulfilled where you are - or it will open your eyes to new possibility, opportunity, advancement or (whatever youre looking for).

Always take the call. Based on your current mindset, At best, you: learn something new about an opportunity that you can pursue with your current co/role; validate that your current opportunities/path are solid and salary is in an appropriate band; begin networking and creating kind relationships with (and even providing referrals to other candidates for) recruiters who may be in a position to help you if and when you want to move on to the next role. At worst, you find either that it’s great practice for the future, maybe meet a new mentor or professional contacts, and/or that there are compelling opportunities elsewhere and need to rethink your current role and/or growth strategy - either at your current role or elsewhere. Always take the convos.

Coming up on promotion eligibility- what should I be looking for?

Background: I’m in an engineering role where there only two of us for the entire organization, I could theoretically get promoted 4 or 5 times before I “cap out.” I started at the lowest level making ~70k. I know other organizations offer the next level at around ~90k. I really like my employer and ability to be fully remote, so I don’t necessarily want to switch companies.

My question is, what raise value would be too low?

There may come the point where constant meetings, being around the same people, or the same environment will cloud your creativity. When this happens, you may need time to yourself in a different environment to think clearly without any disturbance.

Great ideas can wake you up in the middle of the night, during a shower, while walking in the park, or any other setting outside of a meeting.

When training at home what did you need that wasn't supplied by RSM? My home office is well stocked but I want to be as prepared as possible.
