How do you approach promotion conversations with your manager/leadership team? I know people who only go into it if they have a competing offer, I know others who let it be completely led by the manager.

This is solid advice. On your next 1:1 have you manager plot out a plan to get you there.

You should consider having a candid conversation about your ambitions and the path it takes to get there. Also, see if your company has documented leveling and promotion guidelines.

I wish I knew. Just be aware even if you do what is suggested above it can still not work. For last 5 years I have tried. I literally asked point blank this year to both my managing director and team lead is there anything that I should be actively doing to secure a nomination for sr manager. And I was told no, and that they both needed to talk to each other. This was in January. I tried following up on my biweekly check ins and always the answer is oh I need to still connect with the other. The other day my team lead is like oh the nomination list was done in January and you are not on it. I still need to connect to managing director to find out why and what we need to work on with you. 🤷‍♀️. This is been after I have been having conversations the past few years saying I would like to work on how to get to next step. The ironic thing is that when my company puts out the job description they say years of exp is 6+ years. And I am sitting here at over 20 doing a similar job but every few years get more responsibility. My reviews are all high too. I had a prior coach go with me step by step in the description to check that I met all of the qualifications too. And it has taken me awhile to realize I just don’t have leadership support to get there and I am dusting off my resume after being here 15 years at this company as it looks like there is no path for me to make it to the next level.

I ask what the next step/level/title for me would be, and what I need to do to get there. Even if I've just had a promotion, before the next review cycle I'll say something like "I just want to make sure I'm still on track. I think my next step after this would be the ___ role/level. How soon do you think I can get there, and what do I need to accomplish before then?"

Candid converaation in my 1:1 early on. We discussed it within first 4 months of me in role

Looking for thoughts and opinions about HR involvement in employee promotions. More specifically passing up an experienced employee for not having a college degree. We have an employee in our office, who applied for a promotion and despite having a degree, would be a perfect fit. Several supervisors recommended this employee for the position but HR denied the promotion for lack of a degree. I have a graduate degree and I still feel that experience is sometimes more valuable. Thoughts?

I was promoted early this year from an assistant “hourly” role to a managerial “salary excempt” role, but my old job hasn’t been replaced and it’s been 5 months. It’s an unfair workload and assisting someone else takes up so much time that I can’t learn and develop in the managerial role. And I find myself constantly working overtime and not getting paid fairly, even with the pay raise I got when I was promoted. I want to send my employer an email saying they’re in violation of FLSA.

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I actually worry on some level that I’m somehow a moron for not giving a thought to maximizing earnings.

A report opened to me that they are having money problems and wants a raise. We are remote and they moved to a high CoL city. We gave an increase to help with retention 6mths ago. In my response, I helped mentor with best practices on how to ask for a raise professionally since I need to make a case to my Head on finances. But their performance has been avg and not seemingly worthy of another large raise within a short period of time. But how do I respond when they talk about personal finances?

Fellow fishes, an observation. What explains the sudden rise in salaries in new hires.
In 2017/8, $/₹ was 65. Today it's at 80. That's a 20% depreciation over 2017/8 levels. Now, between then and now, salaries may have been corrected 50%. Factor in inflation, and you will see that the hike is just about 20% over a 4 time period. Doesn't seem like big number anymore.
