This is solid advice. On your next 1:1 have you manager plot out a plan to get you there.
You should consider having a candid conversation about your ambitions and the path it takes to get there. Also, see if your company has documented leveling and promotion guidelines.
I wish I knew. Just be aware even if you do what is suggested above it can still not work. For last 5 years I have tried. I literally asked point blank this year to both my managing director and team lead is there anything that I should be actively doing to secure a nomination for sr manager. And I was told no, and that they both needed to talk to each other. This was in January. I tried following up on my biweekly check ins and always the answer is oh I need to still connect with the other. The other day my team lead is like oh the nomination list was done in January and you are not on it. I still need to connect to managing director to find out why and what we need to work on with you. 🤷♀️. This is been after I have been having conversations the past few years saying I would like to work on how to get to next step. The ironic thing is that when my company puts out the job description they say years of exp is 6+ years. And I am sitting here at over 20 doing a similar job but every few years get more responsibility. My reviews are all high too. I had a prior coach go with me step by step in the description to check that I met all of the qualifications too. And it has taken me awhile to realize I just don’t have leadership support to get there and I am dusting off my resume after being here 15 years at this company as it looks like there is no path for me to make it to the next level.
I ask what the next step/level/title for me would be, and what I need to do to get there. Even if I've just had a promotion, before the next review cycle I'll say something like "I just want to make sure I'm still on track. I think my next step after this would be the ___ role/level. How soon do you think I can get there, and what do I need to accomplish before then?"
