I have asked for extensions multiple times and have always been able to get one.
At the point that recruiters have given you an offer, they have invested a lot in bringing you through their process and in deciding you are the best candidate. They don't want to just drop you.
I always try to provide a reason and rationale to justify the extension you are asking for. A good one that is common is "I am supposed to hear back from another company on X date. I am already leaning toward accepting this offer, but would like to have all the info on the table first so that when I decide I won't have any doubts that this is the right fit for me."
They might not be able/willing to extend as much as you would like and if you're waiting on another offer, there's no guarantee they'll get back to you on time, so best to overshoot a little on what you ask for as an extension and let any other companies know that you already have an offer and have asked for an extension in order to entertain their offer. That will often help them accelerate and ensure their offer is competitive, which you can use to negotiate.
