How do you ask about WLB/hours per week in an interview? Do you just ask about culture and hope they talk about it?

Straight up just ask. If they don’t like that you asked and don’t give you a job, you need probably won’t want that and dodged a bullet. Obvious don’t be like, “I’m only gonna work 40” but just try to get an accurate assessment. Also, I asked if I could interview with a peer so I could get a feel for what they work. I actually went to a smaller firm rather than industry, but so far I’m happy and the hours are good enough for me.

@FC1 I’d be disappointed if you didn’t. ;)

I would phrase it as “could you tell me what my schedule would like? Are there certain periods that are more busy (e.g. quarterly or annual close)?” I would not start off with this question though. That annoys me as an interviewer.

I’m worried about hours/flexibility, I.e “hey I have a basketball game tonight from 7-8, so I’ll Be off from 630-830 but can work for another hour when I get home”, that type of environment

I always ask, "what are the overtime opportunities like here".

It's a question that NEEDS to be asked, but yes...in the RIGHT way. The best way is to paint a picture of what you are currently going through and what you hope to achieve. "As you might know in public accounting, there are many hours involved but have actually grown during the pandemic. Currently, I'm working on average about 65 hours a week during non-busy season and I'd like to get more balance in my life. I'm a hard worker and team player so I understand some heavier hours come at peak times but I'd like to find something more reasonable and sustainable. Could you give me an idea of what to expect during the peak times as well as the more normal day operations? -By just saying you want more work life balance and leaving it as it, they NATRUALLY assume you only want 40 hours a week and nothing more. It's a DUMB assumption, I know. However, by giving them an idea of your current situation, they'll be thrilled to say "OMG...WE ARE SO MUCH BETTER! YOU POOR THING!"

Interested in hearing answers as well. I usually know someone or know someone who knows someone at the company and ask them, but a more direct way would be nice

When I was interviewing and got the question of reason for leaving GT, I explicitly said that after going through working through the pandemic I’m looking for a better WLB (on top of other typical reasons) just to get out in front of it. Then later I’d ask for the role specifically what the schedule looks like (I.e., busy at month end, what “slow” means for them, etc.). Honestly if someone balks at those questions then I considered it to be not a great fit. Not worth getting into a job where you know what you’re looking for doesn’t line up with what the company is offering.

I always ask the people in the group about their passions and hobbies outside of work. There’s exceptions of course, but if they have real hobbies that take time (i.e. things that take weekly commitments such as a tennis league, coaching little league, involved at their church) that tells me it’s not often that they have things come up at work that keep them from being able to make those recurring commitments. As an example from a lot of people at big 4, if they limit their hobbies to exercising or cooking (both actually necessary for survival) or traveling (which requires taking PTO), that gives me the impression their job takes up a good chunk of their time. As I said before, definitely exceptions in the form of superhumans or just people that don’t have a ton of hobbies, but I’ve found it to be a telling indicator.

Bonus points for budget priced - I’m wfh with a 2 year old right now, so I want to feel/look decent but not be devastated if it ends up with baby slime on it.

Thinking back to when I was in school. What do teachers have to do now that they didn't 20-30 years ago? What do they need to provide now that they did not have to provide back then? I don't recall buying anything than pencils/paper/folders. We covered our used books with newspaper or paper bags Classrooms were simple, not every inch of wall space was covered in charts, etc. The districts/teachers supplied nothing extra. What changed that teachers have to spend their own $ now?
