How do you balance wanting to be the “go to” person who gets it all done, no matter what, and feeling like you are taken advantage of because of that?

Don't. They don't feel guilty for asking. Only you are responsible for your well-being. People will treat you how you allow them to treat you.

Set boundaries and delegate. I’m struggling with this myself.

Teach them to find the answer themselves and to loop you in at the end to confirm their research on the resolution is correct before they act on it.

I know, but I feel guilty when I do.

Say no, set boundaries, and otherwise suck it up until you are the one delegating to the next go to person

Additional Posts in Small Law / Solos

What billing software does your firm use? We currently use Clio. Our firm is small, but growing. We have issues with the revenue reports that Clio generates. In addition it seems super expensive to add more users. Our account came with 5. When you include the partners, myself, and one associate, we have zero accounts left for secretaries/law clerks, and we can’t really afford $1500/month to add more users.

I believe improving one’s sales conversion rate is something everyone want to improve but no one wants to admit they would like to work it. Funny how lawyers will spend thousands on seminars to improve trial skills. But this topic is not discussed in our profession. I have read books in sales. But am unable to find any for lawyers. I want convert every lead I can. Does anyone have tips, books, cle’s or studied this topic?

Managing attorneys in small firms - how much do you make?

I'm in South Florida. Currently a 6 year associate at a small firm (~12 attorneys, 55 staff). Making a move towards Managing Attorney position that they are considering hiring from outside the firm for. I'm going to make the case that they should promote from within and give me the position. I'm objectively a good candidate for it. Question is... what's a good salary for that position? What do you make? Thanks.

Boutique transactional practice. Firm is growing post-COVID. Things are at risk of falling through the cracks. I need an easy way to track matters for status reports with colleagues in the firm without remaking the wheel.

Currently using Clio, which has its limitations for this purpose. I know colleagues that just use an excel spreadsheet.

Does anybody have a resource available for pricing and billing? I am 2 years out of law school, working as a corporate attorney, and wanting to go solo. Ideally, I will take my corporate client with me, but am working to build work on the side during the transition. Also, do you have any recommendations for document preparation? I would like to draft wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents, but would like a resource that has boilerplate provisions to utilize as a reference.

I have a background in m&a, venture capital, private equity and commercial contracts for athletes (current job at a sports agency). Hi Everyone- I’m going solo soon after four years of being GC. Our company was sold to private equity so there wasn’t really much of a place for a GC anymore. I figured I would fulfill my lifelong dream of opening my own practice. ANYHOW- I have business and employment set up as my primary fields, but I’m curious what fields are fun, that would really lend themselves to solo work, or just be interesting to practice in. Thanks!

I am awaiting my bar results and am working at the solo practitioner’s firm I was at all thru law school. My boss does strictly family law but has known since my first summer that my interest is personal injury, particularly med mal. I would appreciate any advice you might have for someone in my position. Thank you.
