How do you communicate to an employee that he needs to draw the line between being a friend and a leader? For context, I oversee 4 employees, one of whom is a “team lead”. I have a hard time getting him and 2 other employees of the group to see the bigger picture with so many transitions going on in the company. Those 2 other employees are not shy of sharing their opinions/feedback when there’s friction to the team lead which then gets passed to me. When he shared their

I am an external coach for Cisco and several start-ups in San Francisco. I often work with new in seat managers. Your team leader does not understand his role. What he needs is leadership training. This first step into management is often the most difficult especially when the new manager has previous relationships with the team as they were peers. He needs to get his eye level up to management level and not down at the individual contributor level. It is obvious he needs some grooming in this area. If your company has a coaching program I would suggest he'd be considered for it. Good luck.

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. I know they might be teaching all proper UX but in reality companies doesn't follow.
There is no scope for doing research. And it is only a handful of product company that has a design team, rest places doesn't even understand what actual Design is. But being in this field, not everyone will get a chance to work with top design driven companies
