LA is superior in all aspects. SF is a culture-less overpriced hell hole
Pro
Wildly different
First SF is a mass transit city, cable cars, BART, taxis. LA is all driving.
SF is foggy and cold a lot of time, especially in summer, LA super sunny all the time, except for June gloom on the west side.
When I lived in SF I always felt intellectually inadequate (in advertising in 2000), LA is more fun, life, beach and car (people always ask what kind of car you have)... I felt smart.
SF was harder to make friends, LA I quickly made friends.
SF food is tons of Asian of all kinds and Italian, the SF farmers market at the Ferry building is my favorite place. LA is avocado! On any and everything, super healthy, Mexican ... amazing. I miss the food (in NYC now).
In SF when you walk around you see gorgeous views everywhere... LA is concrete. SF rents are brutal, LA affordable for space and light.
That’s my take on it. And I’d move to either place again, love then both for different reasons.

Good assessment, but I wouldn’t say LA is all driving, though perhaps compared to SF. I and many take the train into DTLA often. Also, that comment about feeling dumb and smart is very much a you experience and I wouldn’t apply it to LA. Lol, definitely makes it seem like you are saying LA people are stupid compared to SF despite that being an incredibly anecdotal statement. I’m not sure if you’re implying there isn’t any Asian food in LA, but op there definitely is. I’ve had more Korean food than any other Asian cuisine, but you can do your research and see there is a plethora of variety in LA. And Yes, super health minded down here, but I’d be surprised if that weren’t also the case in SF. For LA, you usually want to get a little outside of the city to go on hikes for our views. Otherwise, this is a pretty good assessment. One thing I’ll add is that (at least from what I’ve heard and experienced) people in LA are more more relaxed and slower going people in SF. People in SF are more face paced and purposeful (maybe scheduled? Idk how to best describe it) in their culture. I think that has probably might impact SVPs experience with making friends. Svp would you agree about the change in pacing from SF to LA?
They are pretty different. SF is way cooler since it’s right on the Bay. LA is way bigger in terms of people and square mileage. LA traffic crushes my soul. I’d take muni/Bart any day but SoCal just doesn’t have the public transit system like the Bay Area. I think both places have good food. I grew up in the Bay Area and live in SoCal now. I feel like it’s comparing apples and oranges. I could never live in LA again due to the traffic but I love the weather and sunshine. Both places are a melting pot too. In my opinion SoCal has more of a Hispanic influence while the Bay has more Asian influence when it comes to food. As for culture both cities have a lot to offer. Golden Gate Park v. La Brea, touristy Fisherman’s Wharf v. Hollywood. Take my opinion with a grain of salt though since I’m a Bay Area transplant who is wishes she could move back but can’t afford it.
I agree. I spent 20+ years in LA and now I am in the Bay Area. I love the hiking up here. Much greener and cleaner. LA functions a little more like a city, whereas The Peninsula is a bit more laid back.
LA is congested, dirty, too much traffic, and the people are terrible. Go north
Rising Star
Better food
+ better ROI on food
They’re both kinda shaky.
Typical meetup in LA looks like an influencer group - fun, sociable, dressed to impress, quietly dropping xannies at night to drown out social pressures before bed, lots of mimosas
Typical meetup in SF is a bunch of techies pretending to not be techies, talking about their latest failed startup in an organic dive bar
Rising Star
Based on this assessment, I assume D1 has never been to either city.

San Francisco used to be great. Now it has been overrun by tech bros, and there are few native San Franciscans left in the city because it is so unaffordable. Tech folks are very self-important because they think they are changing the world when they are really just making a buck. Homeless problem is out of control. Traffic getting outside of the city is terrible but transit options are good in the city. Entirely unaffordable.
LA is a concrete jungle. You're trading tech bros for self-important Hollywood wannabes (and the people who do make it in Hollywood are even more self-important). Homeless problem is out of control. Traffic is a nightmare. Largely unaffordable.
LA has better weather and food. San Francisco has better views. Even with Hollywood and its accompanying vanity (and LA's general superficiality), LA feels more authentic than 2020 San Francisco.
TBH I don't like either and would rather move back to Hawaii or to Portland.
This is all coming from an LA native.

If it is common, you can certainly avoid it OP. I’ve done it and I haven’t even tried
Aren’t they complete opposites in every possible way?

No.
