How do you consultants manage stress? I am literally thinking about work and deadlines all the time. It’s affecting my health so much that I am falling sick often.

Listen to your body. This industry is toxic and people stay on the promise that they might make partner. The road to get there is rife with abuse. When a job starts to change you, you feel it in your body, or you can’t set aside the work at the end of the day, walk away. It’s not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of you respecting and listening to your body.

There comes a point as you get more experience and get a lot more reps where you become more detached from every fire drill. You still maintain a passion for high quality work, but you let problems become intellectual curiosities rather than life or death. It took me a long time and a lot of teeth grinding days of high stress. Ultimately, I think having a few “failures” on projects helped me realize that things will work out in the end. Projects don’t go wrong because of one person, and the responsibility is shared by the full team. Stay committed to qualify, but try not to focus on being perfect or being right all the time. You’re solving problems so sticky that someone is willing to pay millions of dollars to have someone else fix it. You won’t always have a perfect answer, but you’ll often have the best answer anyone has seen so far.

Take care of your health first As much as a “staff aug” or long term engagement gets a bad rap, it’s def good when you need to have a better WLB in the firm, see if that’s a possibility (something for the next 6-12 months even), will also give you the opportunity to schedule you-time including working out, visiting the doctor more regularly, taking more regular breaks, and even scheduling time off without affecting your work too much.

In five years, nothing you did in this project will matter. In five years, your career won’t even noticed this week as a blip. If you took tomorrow off last minute for a mental health day it truly won’t matter

I was in this situation a few months ago. Full disclosure, I ended up changing jobs, but there were many things that helped me manage. First I think you have to identify- have you always felt like this or are these new feelings? Is there a new boss, project, coworker (or combo) that changed and might be causing it. Then, evaluate all the things that are causing the stress and make a list of what you can change.

I think a lot of us don't but we've somehow normalized being stressed out all the time because that's how everyone around us is. Its why I'm looking for exit opportunities.

Being active and lifting helped me, you‘ll have to do it consistently. I don’t know If you’re the kind of person who needs to hear this but: Nobody cares if you‘ll die and fall of your chair, the next one will take over. So there is 0 shame in declining more workload or even change departments, jobs, industries. You have to come first

Also I don’t think anyone ever gets fired in big 4 consulting so what’s to stress over?

Unless this is sarcasm, EY2, this is one of the most blatantly uninformed opinions I’ve seen in a while.

Okay, taking a big step here. I’m 28F and have spent most of my 20s traveling to every continent and generally prioritizing experiences. Just bought a condo in a MCOL city. Single, unmarried, no children. I’m looking for a temperature check on how I’m doing currently and what I can do better. I’m not really investing and would like to start. I’m a bit overwhelmed with financial literature and didn’t have much guidance growing up. Need particular help with last row under savings. Thank you!
