First: Don’t beat yourself up. It happens to all of us. I know this because I have a friend who is the suavest person ever. People are always lining up to hire him, but he’s also told me about multiple cringe interviews he’s totally screwed up. Second: After something like this happens, it always helps me to truly, objectively reflect on whether it failed because of something I need to change or because my brain was having an off day. If it’s the former, do the thing. If the later, pour a glass of wine, go to bed early and begin the process of forgetting about it.

Thank you! Truly appreciate it, and all great points.

OP: Remember, you were interviewing them too. Did they do a good job? Did they make you feel comfortable and try to get the best out of you? Or are you better off knowing now the place wasn’t a good fit? Maybe you dodged a bullet. I’m not sure of the background, but here’s a quote that may help put things into perspective.

Haha, thank you, this is amazing.

I agree with above. It goes both ways! I find the best interviews I’ve had were with the best interviewers who made me feel like we were engaging in a convo instead of a Q&A. It wasn’t all you - and it just wasn’t a good fit. You got the next one 🤗

Such a good point about good interviews being more conversational. Thank you! ☺️

Can you pinpoint what went wrong? If so then great - because a lot of people don’t get jobs but can’t pinpoint why, and never get to better themselves on the feedback. Also - when it’s the right fit you’ll get the job - I overlook silly things when I know the person is right for what we need. Believe in yourself! The right job will come!

I definitely have learnings from where I think it went wrong - it’s good to know what to work on. You’re definitely right too about overlooking silly things when it’s the right fit, I do this when hiring too but it’s hard to remember being on the other side. Thank you so much, @R/GA 🤗

If you’re comfortable, tell close friends about it. I was absolutely gutted about an interview that didn’t pan out, but when I told my friends/former coworkers about it I heard so many stories about them experiencing the same thing. One of them had even interviewed at the same company I did and had the same experience I did, which made me feel so validated. It’s been hard for me to share the bad news in my life with people, but I’ve learned over time sharing the bad helps you feel good

Salary in interview. I was asked about my salary in an interview at MBB. Say I was currently receiving 70k fixed + 22k bonus. I told them "my salary is 100K including bonus". Can this little round off hurt later? The interviewer was basically asking me how much I am expecting and I told him industry standards. Kept pursuing it. In end he said just give me sense of your current salary and so I rounded off.

What’s your next move, if any? I had three interviews at the end of August (obtained outside of their normal recruiting process) with an AmLaw 100 firm for an associate job.
