I cycled through two consultancies due to crippling anxiety and work place bullying.
I woke up one day and decided to go to therapy and see a hypnotherapist.
What has changed?
- daily cognitive behavioral therapy
- stopped caring about what others thought of me. We are all going to be dead in 50 years anyways
- believing I am one of the smartest people in any room
- made sure I sleep 7 to 8 hrs every night.
- discovered cannibis
- cleaned up my diet (stayed away from non processed food)
With that said, my anxiety still creeps up every now and then when I have competing priorities, fatigued, or presenting. When we start coming back to the office or client site, there is always a chance I'll be more anxious presenting in front of people in real life as opposed to presenting to my laptop screen.
BC1 - Agree that showing confidence is incredibly important. In this business where our job performance is somewhat subjective, managing optics is everything.
Hence, anyone with anxiety and depressive tendencies should dedicate 1 hour each day on mental self care.
There is a very thin line between failure and success imo.
I have my fair share of anxiety and depression cycles and what has helped me was a very small dose of lexapro and going to therapy - it was actually really cool that my last therapist would field advise related to work and team dynamics which helped my performance and relationships at work. I have high functioning anxiety and a problem with setting and enforcing boundaries so she helped a ton with that.
All of that said I don’t necessarily think leaving is the right answer but as long as you tend to what is causing these feelings you’ll be able to utilize the tools at any position later on in life
C1 - Agree. I knew untreated anxiety and depression will follow you whether you stay or leave consulting.
