roll with it. And deal with the facts. If you followed the case, this outcome was inevitable. Cut & dry. Media painted a picture that was based on lies. The whole crossing state lines with a gun was a lie. The story about him being out there on his own a lie.
I believe that may be incorrect. I think it is important they identify ethnicity. Pay close attention to the news, you may notice that the media will almost always say a white whomever then try to tie it to racism or white supremacy. Of the recent shootings in the last few years, or of the awful parade situation in Wisconsin, as soon as it is not a white person, ethnicity is no longer reported as it does not support the narrative.

You explain to them the media defamation, and brutal mistreatment of that persons character and quality of life before a trial.
Evidence was clear as day, self defense is a right!
Oklahoma High School 1: I don’t care what those men did previously. That has absolutely no bearing on what happened that night. To imply “they deserved it” or “who cares—they were awful people anyway” is not only victim blaming, it is approving Rittenhouse for acting as judge, jury, and executioner. You might as well not have courts.
MHS2, nothing that you said is true or matter. To think there will be a sequel is to admit their will be violent riots breaking out again soon, which assumes the worst of humanity. The firearm was not obtained illegally. The verdict doesn't need to send out a message, it needs to follow the facts of the law. That is where you have a huge disconnect.
If you’re a white male, you’ll at least get a trial and there’s a damn good chance you’ll walk.
MES 1, once again, has no basis in facts. You cannot deal with students and let your emotions lead you.
News flash: Teachers are not therapists. We are teachers. I studied history, literature and got a teaching credential. I do not have a license as a M.F.T. or other kind of mental-health professional.
A brief acknowledgement of current events, or a brief discussion in certain classes whose subjects are tied to current events (like Social Studies) is fine. But helping students "process emotions"? That's for parents, guardians, school nurses, counselors or therapists.

To answer the OP’s question… It’s tough. I don’t really know what to say, but here’s a thought- show the movie “The Trial of the Chicago 7” to your class.
To me, this case is very much like that one- you’ve got a very politically-charged case, a ton of division, a completely corrupt judge, and a very obvious situation that really doesn’t require a whole lot of critical thinking.
And just like the Trial of the Chicago 7, the verdict flies in the face of all common sense. The people defending Rittenhouse and the judge and jury of this case will find themselves on the wrong side of history. It doesn’t do a whole lot for today, but there is hope to be found in even the darkest times.
Well said IMS1! Just what I was thinking, but you said it better!

Wow. Nice way to work that in there
I’d break into an impromptu community circle to allow space for processing, wonders, and feelings.
I apologize. There have been so many unarmed Black people killed in police related situations these past few years that I mixed up the details. Jacob Blake was paralyzed in front of his children. He was breaking up a fight between two women and no matter his background he did not deserve to die. Just like the two men who were there to protest his shooting did not deserve to die.

It’s understandable. Hard to keep up with all these senseless shootings.
Let me help you understand the claim of self-defense. I wrote this article shortly before the verdict came down.
For reference, I am a classroom teacher in my 28th year, a martial artist, self-defense instructor, and active shooter response trainer. I've read no fewer than three dozen books on the topic and have spent thousands of hours learning, teaching, and studying self-defense.
I was in the classroom when Columbine happened (on the heels of Paducah, KY and Jonesboro, AR shootings). I was in the classroom on 9/11.
You and your students are getting upset over the Rittenhouse verdict? People need some perspective.

White privilege at its finest!
Don’t discuss it! Based on the responses to your post it’s pretty clear there are many differing opinions regarding recent current events. I’ve witnessed a teacher try to have an open discussion about a “current event” with students and it just ended up being a regurgitation of the news media narrative rife with divisiveness. It was painful to watch and listen as the teacher did nothing to inject any kind of discernment, probably because he liked the “safe” and popular view of the kids that were sharing.

Student: “What you do think of the KR case?”
Me: *walks over to the window and peers through the blinds*
“It’s… complicated.”
Student: “….ok.”
* Wonderwall plays *
There will be students who will need time and patience to make sense of this. Thank goddess you’re aware of and sensitive to their emotional needs.
I guess I live under a rock. What case?
It is always difficult especially when everyone’s cell phones get the alert at the same time. I typically stop the lesson and let students have the floor to express their emotions. Sadly, my students aren’t surprised by the injustices of the judicial system.

My god, NJHS1… you recognize your students’ humanity? What kind of a monster are you?
Stick to facts, if emotions come in, stop the conversations because it will do no good.
Chief
Exactly. Because the last thing you want is for your students to be human beings. It so much better to just train assembly workers for jobs that no longer exist.
CE3. Jacob Blake is alive.
On the same day Rittenhouse was found not guilty a young black man was also found not guilty because of self-defense, but the media is not covering that case. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/black-man-who-claimed-self-defense-while-shooting-a-gun-found-not-guilty-on-same-day-as-rittenhouse-verdict?_amp=true
The Washington Examiner should be on that list as well.
Most of my students don't want to discuss late-breaking news or current events. Two possible reasons ... they are special ed although a lot of them keep track of what's going on in the world. And also, they don't want to discuss it with an adult. It's something they feel only deals with them.
Actually you don’t need to be a therapist to engage in active listening, and validate students feelings. And, your right teachers are not therapists.
