1. You are smart enough to have gotten into law school. 2. You are smart enough to have graduated from law school, passed the bar and gotten a job. 3. You have learned alot in whatever time you’ve been practicing law. 4. Ask questions when you are doing something you don’t understand. 5. Have confidence that the partner knows your skill level and is not really asking for something that you can’t do. The partner is not asking you to stretch beyond your capability (see#4). 6. When working with opposing counsel, learn the magic phrase: “I will discuss that with my client and get back to you.” Or some variant. And if your negotiation is 80% that response, fine. As someone experienced, I’d rather hear that from a junior lawyer than some bullshit. 7. Most important: the fact that you feel like you don’t know enough puts you light years ahead of the ego driven lawyers who spout bullshit because they are too arrogant to admit they don’t know. 8. One day you will say in a negotiation or to a client “I don’t know, I will think about that and get back to you” and you won’t be embarrassed or feel inadequate at all. That will happen, without doubt.
