Don’t sweat it! Everyone fucks up from time to time. Own it, apologize if necessary, learn from your mistakes and then move on.
Own up to it and move on. Happens to everyone.
Go easy on yourself! Mistakes happen, especially when you’re junior, but even when you’re not. You’re only human. Do your best, learn from it, and don’t do it again. And... we all cry in the bathrooms...
I find it helps to own the oversight instead of jumping to your own defense and focus on how to move the project forward. Usually it’s better received in my experience! Try not to dwell on the mistake or be too hard on yourself – focus on what was learned. Now you’re more experienced for next time!
Also I’ve totally ended up in a bathroom to compose myself. People tend to act like we juniors aren’t enough when there’s an oversight, but I’d say doing the best you know how to for the job and working hard is absolutely enough.
Lexapro. I used to be such a mess and now I don’t GAF. I have anxiety and trauma and everything about advertising was difficult but now I don’t turn beet red and sweat and stammer when I have to present.
Legit the best thing for my career was an amazing boss and a prescription for antidepressants. I’m still a crier tho - every emotion just sort of leaks out of my eyes. We all need to hide in the bathroom every now and then, but you’re likely beating yourself more than you should. You’re a human not a robot
Everyone makes mistakes. You’re human. Own it, apologize, remember how this feels and try not to do it again. Also remember - this isn’t life and death, you’re not saving the world. It happens and it sucks, but don’t beat yourself up - that won’t help. Just learn from it.
Learn from your mistakes. You can only grow from it. Don’t let this get you down. Pick yourself up and keep moving forward!
Don’t let a mistake reflect in how you feel about yourself or your competency. You are completely capable and absolutely not a failure. There will be a lot of setbacks, minor and major, in your career. Don’t let them beat you! It sounds like you’re feeling the shame- it doesn’t sound like you were defensive or dishonest. When I make mistakes (which, holy crap, happens so often), I just tell myself it’s the risk of being human. Copywriting is a human job! Also- what would you tell a friend who made the same mistake?
Best thing someone told me when I was in a more junior role was that I was expected to make mistakes. Junior level was the time to make all of them and then learn from them. The farther you get in your career, the less you’ll be expected to make them with higher risk.
My boss recently told me that part of their expectations for a mid-level position is to still be learning. Thought that was pretty cool of them to say because I totally am.
No one is perfect and all you can do is put your best work forward, give them lots of options and have a good attitude. You got this!
