Idk. Let me know when you figure it out. I'm dragging my laptop around on a backpacking trip for two weeks for a project I rolled off.
@a1- crazy. Life is way too short for that nonsense.
Agreed with a2. About to head on vacation. Deleted work email off my phone. ✌️ probably not the best play for my career, I work too much to not enjoy my time off.
I don't take laptop or work phone on vacation. People need to assume/respect/understand that I'm unavailable during my time off. If you check email and reply, even if you don't get on conference calls, you'll set the precedent that you'll reply on vacations.
I try to go places with no wifi
I've learned to carefully select the partners I work with.
Have a spouse who gives you a dirty look every time you think of work on vacation
Get out of NY. Leave laptop at home.
If you feel obligated or are asked, I found that the best balance is to leave the laptop at home but take an iPad, check email at least twice a day but refuse to get on Conf calls. People will respect that. If the don't that's their problem not yours

Short term: Make it known that you are not working on vacation and be willing to accept some shade.
Long term: Avoid managers/directors that are workaholics
I still struggle with this as a 3rd year SM. I ended up leaving my work cell phone and laptop at home when I went on PTO the last time. I really needed a break and it was the only way to decompress. It still took me 3 days to start to relax.
Update: i decided to sit down and finish the proposal tonight and don't touch my phone and laptop tomorrow.
Hmm...It's a lifestyle choice. I, and most I know at my firm, just go offline starting Friday ~5PM till Monday morning. Sure, I'll check the occasional email on my phone but it'll be surprising if my team is ever working on Sat/Sun. If your team/firm commits to it, makes it easier in practice.
Thanks all for your responses. It is nothing to do with what my teams', my company's or my clients' expectations. It is more about me finding a way to deal with it. I tried not checking emails or not carrying laptop but always feeling uneasy until i actually start working.
You are plugged in - Get out of the zone few days .
It's more common as you progress. Part of making the big bucks. I try to isolate my teams from this, but I fully expect an hour or two of emails here and there before my wife wakes up when on PTO
I am still having this issue. This weekend, i could not have a restful sleep including a couple of nightmares. I cant stop the anxiety. Perhaps, it is time to get some professional help.
