Sounds like you’re talking about someone with self esteem issues. Tough love doesn’t have a place in the work place, in my opinion. Constructive collaboration is what makes great work. In my experience working with people who talked down to me, I usually try to get their to their materialistic level and compliment their shoes or music they’re listening to, ask about their weekend. They will enjoy that, and will show them that their fireable attitude doesn’t effect you.
Well this is rough, and I dont like a-holes either, but if you work for them, theyre allowed to talk down to you--until their personality or lack of skill catches up with them one way or another. They're under no obligation to treat you as an equal or friend.
I like the suggestion of asking them about themselves--but I wouldnt want to talk to a jerk about their shoes very long myself.
Laughing at one's boss behind his or her back is a proud, timeless tradition. Enjoy it.
More senior, peer, or subordinate ?
Talking down to someone is a sure sign of a terrible manager. I’ve yet to see someone do it who isn’t a complete disaster at their own job. Generally it comes from their own fear when they feel a lot of eyes are on them to perform. I would call them out on it respectfully, and if that doesn’t work, go speak to their boss. You’re almost never the first to complain with those people and they damage the work the agency is trying to do, so don’t feel guilty about it.
