I am 65 and retired 4 months ago. Debt free. Pension plus social security make the expenses. Will dip into 401K as necessary. Glad I did not retire earlier. Enjoy the relaxation and no stress. Spend more time with my 7 grandchildren. Volunteer some. Read to keep my mind sharp.

I am working on investing and saving so that my wife and I will have the median US household income for the rest of our lives. Right now that is $63.7k / annum. I have no desire to run the rat race my whole life but I will probably work to do something I love. On a pure savings basis and applying the 4% rule, that would be $1.59M (which we are no where close to). To assist, I’m working on stabilize my two occasional rental properties to generate a $20k positive cash flow. My wife will also be full pension eligible at 52/55 which will also provide about $25k per year in today’s dollars. So if I’m able to get an ongoing cash flow stream of $20k from investments and $25k from deferred income, I only need an extra $20k per year in savings which would be around $500k saved up. I’m sure there’s a lot of people that would disagree with me, and that’s fine. I’m a-ok living a modest life.

@SM2, yes, that’s correct. When I refer to savings, I refer to investment account(s) that I can draw down ~4% per year.

Having enough money to choose to do anything with my life without worrying about how much it pays. For me, that’s around $5M.

Our company is attempting to move from basic agile to the scaled agile framework (SAFe). In preparation, we are trying to make clear who will fit into each role. Not really a question, but maybe I’ll hit FIRE early since of the roughly ~20 or so stocks i keep in my portfolio, 3 of them were a substantial GME position I entered in September (and exited in the midst of the craze thankfully), RKT (expecting mortgage lenders to do well in the buying craze) and L Brands 😳. Never thought I’d hit 3x

Fire friendly car? I have a bmw and it’s paid off but it’s a ticking time bomb. I want something more reliable. Should I trade in and get a Toyota? For purposes of fire, I could get an older model since they last forever. But the new ones are tempting and I would pay maybe $200/mo. Worth it or just keel the bmw?

New to fire, started my first year in the workforce last year putting 13% + 1.5% employee match into a Roth 401k. This year I upped it 1% so 14+1.5% total now. For reference I made in the mid 80s in year one. Is this a safe contribution early in a career? Any tips, or suggestions on how to allocate my savings?

Mega Backdoor Roth IRA question/After-Tax contributions

Crosspost from a thread in the KPMG bowl discussing Mega Backdoor Roth IRA/After-Tax contributions. I wanted to ask a quick question for a “mistake” I may have made.

I forgot to change my contributions from after-tax to Roth + Traditional. A few paychecks went through as after-tax and hasn’t touched my $20,500 contribution limit for the year yet.

How will those funds be used/taxed? What are the implications here.

What’s your recommendation if my new 401k does not accept pension rollover? I think the only 2 roll over options left are traditional/Roth IRA, right? If I first roll over the pension to traditional IRA, and then immediately roll over the traditional IRA to my new 401k, will I still trigger the pro rata rule when I do backdoor Roth in the future? I have never contributed to a traditional IRA or done backdoor Roth so far.

Or maybe I should just put all of them in to work? I never take that much of the risk. I have home equity for emergency fund. Thanks!
