How do you disconnect from work?

This vacation week, drop some tips for how you unplug and disconnect from work & the office.

I learned early in my career from a tenured professional that when you go on vacation, you are doing your family and clients a disservice by not completely unplugging. Have someone available for emergency situations and turn everything (email, phone, and whatever else you have) on away, sleep, unavailable, etc. and let people know you will not have access to voicemail and email. If you absolutely have to check your stuff once a day, do it, but don’t spend more than ten minutes doing it. Or, you can be that person who works through their vacation and neither your client nor your family get your full attention.

Went camping and turned the phone off. If i don't disconnect I'll burn out and then I'll be of no use to anyone.

I don't check email from home and my assistant knows to not call unless it is an emergency or something that is very time sensitive (which very few things are)....

We're all very disciplined about running our businesses but only some of us are as disciplined at stepping away for a time.

The sooner you realize that to be better at your job you need to be away from your job for a time the sooner you'll learn to enjoy being unplugged for a bit.

Need Advice: I’m taking a 1 week vacation during the next month ans I just got invited to an all day training for 3 days starting the day after I return.

Am I crazy for asking my manager to go to the non mandatory training and leaving my SC to defend for themselves for almost 2 weeks?

I asked 3 of my higher ups to write me letters of recommendation a month ago when I put in my resignation. I went on PTO for a couple weeks & followed up with my manager today. He told me “actually I was told we aren’t allowed to write them for you. Sorry.”

I asked why and he just shrugged and continued the conversation...

Has anyone heard of anything like this? Bosses “not being allowed” to write LORs for exiting employees? I’m leaving on my own terms & good standing.

I have been at my company for a little less than 4 years now. I’ve had the third highest sales last year out of a team of 50 and consistently the highest outbound calls per week. They told me I can start WFH once I hit $1mil in profit, but then rescinded right before I hit the goal. They have also denied simpler request like time off, when I know they have approved this before for others. I feel super unappreciated, but the money is great. I’m not sure if I should look elsewhere and start over?

I’m up for promotion this year, and I’ve been working so hard and my feedback is amazing and I’ve wanted this for awhile. Now, an immediate relative is actively dying and I may go out on a short leave, and I also have some PTO planned so that I can visit family oversees later this fall. With all that’s happening, I’m not going to hit my 90% utilization target, which is a checkbox in my promo. (cont).

Anyone ever feel awkward or bad letting folks know you’re out for a religious holiday? Yom Kippur is on Monday this year and there’s virtually no other Jews in my group, so it feels like an inconvenience to the rest of my team that I’ll be out on a random Monday.

How are things at a USDC vs traditional consulting? Work life balance? Co workers? I like the idea of a remote role because travel was getting to be to

I am level 1 resource. Need classroom management ideas. We've been placed on a block schedule this year due to Covid so I have students for 85 minutes every other day. I have a larger group who are all working at different levels and have different goals. I am constantly jumping from one student to another trying to work them but I am failing. I can't keep them on task, quite, or motivated. If I walk away from one, they're immediately messing around. Group work is a joke. HELP!
