How do you draw boundaries with work? For me I do not do work before 9 or after 6. And I regularly block off my calendar between meetings if I can for time to relax or just be heads down in work without being in meetings constantly.

The only boundary I draw is the boundary that I will go above and beyond to deliver on my clients’ needs sooner than they have asked for it!

For context for those finger wagging me about my “work ethic,” I have a history of depression and anxiety which cripples all aspects of my life, including work performance. In the past if I did not draw strict boundaries with work and allow ample time for self care, my mental health suffered as did my work performance. I have found drawing boundaries with work helps me both personally and professionally.

Same boat as you, OP!

I burnt myself to the ground for the first 5 or so years of my career, and then after I had kids it was a wake-up call for me that something had to give. I need to actively protect my mental health and keep my anxiety/depression at bay if I want to stand a chance at accomplishing anything. It's one thing to just have work commitments at stake, but also having to be there for my kids as a mom made me realize just how much I really needed to prioritize myself in order to be my best.

I do this, OP. It doesn't always work, but I try to stick to it. I'm not someone that is trying to start companies or be the next Bezos. A decent salary and good lifestyle is all I want.

I started 2 companies and I could not have done it with this work ethic. Timing is everything and if you don’t move fast you get left behind.

Working at a big company might be possible but I guarantee your Senior Partner/CEO or the Partners in your firm work longer hours.

Agree on your point about meetings though - don’t waste time in irrelevant meetings.

Good idea!

This is me (tho I start at 8).

I also endeavor to minimize emails (I often don’t send any in a day; max 5). I also keep a 24 hour SLA. Not sending them also means fewer in return. I’m responsive on chat so more things get addressed real time.

These are great tips! I do sometimes check my phone and reply to emails during the 8-9am hour and after 6 but I try to keep it to a minimum.

I ignore calls - then they are forced to IM me to see if I'm available. On the whole it's rude to not check in with someone before calling anyhow. I tentatively accept meetings that I think are unnecessary. I'll join as a silent observer just to keep an eye on things though.

Try is wouldn’t fly at McK. It appears to work at your current employer though and sounds like it’s working for you, and that is great!

I’m happy for you. Glad you found somewhere that fits for you.

How do you make this work at Deloitte? I 💯 believe in boundaries but find that 9-6 is pretty difficult to enforce in client services. I left consulting because I needed more wlb and my boundaries weren’t respected. In my current job 8-5:30 is the norm and the not having to constantly reiterate my boundaries means that when I do have the occasional night where I need to work later it doesn’t impact me in the same way. I also never have fire drills like I experienced in consulting. That was the worst for my mental health. Working late because of a fire drill is completely different than knowing two weeks in advance that I likely will have a late night and I’m fine with the latter.

I’m not able to travel for family reasons and my group rarely travels anyways. And if the client send me an invite that doesn’t work for me I simply suggest another time.

Tenant has long hair and keeps clogging the drains. I have had this house for 12 years and never had a problem before she moved in. Now I'm having to have the tub drain cleaned every 3 months. I even replaced the main stack and trap. The plumber says no doubt the root cause is the hair. I bought some strainers for the drain but she won't use them. Do I really have to keep doing this? Or can I somehow blame her for excessive wear and tear?
