From where I work, they hold zoom meetings on mental health– how to know when you're burned out, what to do about it, and a coupon for a free session. The company then hands out suggestion bosxes on what they need and try to work on what's doable. It's basically awareness + solution kind of thing.
We routinely schedule blocks of time that are "unplug" times, when staff is encouraged to not check email, etc. It's amazing how much technology has become such an integral part of our everyday life. A break from time to time is so refreshing and very well-received by team members.
That's pretty amazing actually, I may adopt that. We didn't do much, didn't even acknowledge it honestly, but overall, they've tried to keep the work culture pretty calm and not crazy which I appreciate...
I usually appreciate thank you cards that have messages reminding us take care of ourselves. Small tokens like gift cards are nice too, I genuinely feel appreciated.
Just reminders that we're valued. I like gift cards/coffee cards and all that but think they mean a little bit more if they're personalized. I understand this is hard if you have a large team. I think Associate 1's unplug idea sounds amazing. I would love it if we were encouraged to unplug or take a break from emails/virtual meetings etc during the month and focus on our work-life balance. Available times to consult with HR or whoever to smooth out any issues regarding work-life balance would be cool also.
Honestly, and I know this probably sounds jaded, if you are wanting to make floor nurses feel appreciated during MH month: 1. Make the charge nurse/manager manager pass the meds for at least 1 nurse each shift (make sure each nurse gets a shift start that’s free of a med pass at least once) and let them use that time to practice meditation or simple stretching in a private break-room. 2. Approve PTO/vacation requests. I once had a 1 day PTO request submitted 3 weeks in advance refused during MH month… it was so I could go to therapy again for the first time in ages for work-related PTSD. Really a slap in the face to have it refused. 3. Don’t you DARE say “we’re in this together” unless everybody has worked the same OT and crisis care as the nurses and unless everybody got the same bonuses as the admin.
My current place of work is amazing, the problematic places were past companies. My current workplace actually has this great thing where the CEO herself will come say “good morning” a few times a week, and remind us that we are valued and appreciated. It’s small but it helps the day to day grind.
Oh, and ditch any mandatory meetings, especially any to “help” the nurses. Just don’t do mandatory meetings. Wasting our time and energy to be told the stuff we already know to do and simply don’t have time/energy to do… yeah, another slap in the face. Seriously “go try pilates or relax with a book” as our precious free time to try and do that is stolen for a meeting to tell us about it. Ugh.
