How do you explain in subsequent interviews you were fired? Is it impossible to get a job after you were let go?

Not impossible. Especially if you were laid off in 2020/2021 everyone understands times are tough because of covid recession. Like any other interview, the focus should be on what appeals to you in the new firm and what you can bring to the new firm. You don’t need to get too detailed about why you left previous jobs. “Work slowed down and they no longer had a position for me unfortunately but I learned a lot about XYZ there that I think would be a great fit for the XYZ practice here at new firm! For example, [example cases/transactions].”

You dont have to reveal that you were let go for cause and you should never divulge that information. Just state irreconciable differences or you wanted to move on. Most firms do not give out that information anyway.

You can be very generic on why you want to leave. The firm didn't have upward room for me to grow.

If you have never been fired, you’ve had a boring career. Own it.

Update: I accepted a new job that pays 40% more than the place that let me go last Friday (doing substantially similar work). Everything happens for a reason. Thank you to everyone for your input on this thread, it gave me more confidence going into the interview. I sincerely appreciate it.

Were you actually fired (i.e. for cause) or you were just let go? I’ve been let go before and would just say that the firm was great but that you no longer had your space there.

Own it.

If you were fired because you screwed up, be honest and tell the new place what you learned and what steps you took to make sure it didn’t happen again

Just to be clear. This is good advice or...?

I just lied and said I resigned but this is awhile ago so I wouldn't recommend it 😂.

Ha not sure I would do that. Can employers check this during their background search?

like

Make something up that’s partly true but hides the reason you were fired. And hope they don’t investigate too much.

If your first gig right after law school you might consider taking time to travel well pandemic but then still possible to take time off to do soul searching. Get your next job set up already even if not law something using your legal experience.

One of the primary aims of the criminal justice reform movement is to help ex-convicts re-enter the workforce by sealing criminal records, and making it more difficult for employers to judge applicants based on criminal history. The idea is that people are redeemable and capable of reform. Yet the same movement thoroughly enjoys getting people fired and publicly shaming them for making arguments they find “offensive”. A rapist is capable of reform, but not someone who makes a dumb tweet. Got it.

I hear severance is two weeks at Accenture. Anyway to negotiate that? No savings and a lot of loans at the moment.

My wife was informed a few weeks ago that she would be laid off as of end of year. She signed the paperwork and will be receiving a decent severance due to her tenure there. Now the company is saying they may have some other work for her to do for a few months and they could extend her contract if interested. If she says no, is she still eligible for her severance since she already signed her paperwork?

Does anyone else feel concerned that once the fed raises rates and inflation falls or stagnates, Milbank scale will remain but the current associate’s market will not? The incremental risk of being laid off is not worth an extra $10-20k imo.

We have our nanny a 10% pay raise in September to mark her two year anniversary with us (amounted to something like $2.50 more per hour). We were expecting (I was seven months pregnant at the time) and I told her it was (1) annual raise but (2) would also cover the fact that she’d be taking care of another baby. This morning she asks us whether we can talk about her raise now that she’ll be watching an extra kid. I awkwardly was like “well that’s what the prior raise covers” and she (contd)

How hard would it be to make the jump from designer to art director? For context, when applying for this job I thought I would be a designer with some ideation opportunities (there are no Junior Art Directors in our creative hierarchy). Craving for more ideation/big-thinking art direction in my next gig.

I recently moved out of my apartment complex 2 weeks ago and ended my lease early because I had to move for work. The leasing office calls me today and said they “forgot” to bill me for a $1200 rent concession I received when I first moved in (First Month free rent promotion). After looking the lease, I found the clause but I really don’t want to pay especially when they made the mistake on not billing me and are just now following up 2 weeks later. Advice? Ideas? Similar situations?
