Exactly as above. Though, I’ll add one story as a cautionary tale about waiting.

I had a friend start her own agency two years ago and needed some transcreation work done. She had no money and a tenuous relationship with this client. So for a year, I charged her rock-bottom rates for piecemeal projects so she had time to build her client relationship and expand her client roster.

This year, I raised my rates for her by 50% (still under what I charge other people!). There was no issue at all. It’s something I wish I did a long time ago. It placed a devalued sense on my time and her perception of the quality of my work. As soon as my prices went up, the working relationship improved.

I’m already planning to raise my rates again so they match my other clients. I’d suggest you not wait too long to inform them, especially if this is to keep your rates in-line with other professionals at you level.

I sent them email at the beginning of the year saying my rates were going up in 2022.

I’ve successfully started freelancing full time since being laid off from my full time job in March. I’m so grateful I have plenty of work to do but I’m feeling overwhelmed at the learning curve of being a freelancer. Does anyone have any tips on how they manage their time and client expectations, along with everything else? Or any books that they found helpful? I’m so guilty of being a yes man and then getting overwhelmed.

So I’ve finally finished my consulting website for my “side hustle.” Here’s the issue: I have a full time job doing the same thing I’ll be doing as a consultant (strategy.) In the guidebook I signed at my full-time company, the only note re: consulting is that you cannot work for competitors of agency clients. Of course I won’t be doing that and will be stringent about who my clients are, but how do I advertise my new consulting LLC without concerning my employer, particularly on LinkedIn?

Did my first freelance gig for an agency last week. Just a one-week stint of high level concepting. Made the mistake of not writing up a contract beforehand, just had a verbal agreement of my daily rate.

Finished the project and they loved what I brought them. Now haven’t heard back after sending the invoice. I know it was recent, still a little worried I’m going to get ghosted. Anyone else ever deal with this?

I’m not convinced that contracting on 1099 is better than W2, since you pay 15% extra self employment tax.

If you have one 1099 gig you can claim all your expenses for the year against that and then go W2 for the rest. Am I missing something?

I’ve been dabbling with the idea of getting into copywriting as something to soon the side but I have no experience doing it. What steps should I take (books to read, gigs to start with or pursue, etc) if I want to go from $0 and next to ) experience to $40k or so a year?

Right now I’m currently unemployed and taking a break from my fine art stuff to try to get back into tech sales, but I was looking to expand my skill set and also generate extra money at the same time.
