It’s a double-edged sword. I’m passionate about DE+I. But, at the same time, I do get annoyed by being asked to do this work for free. Our salaries are based on a 40-hour work week. So, when you think about it, any extra work we do on top of our 40-hour work week decreases our rate. Given that marginalized groups are already more likely to be underpaid, it’s like they’re marginalizing us even more. There should be some kind of pay/bonus structure in place for any employee who does DE+I work on top of their day-to-day. There should be a job code to note how much additional emotional, mental, and physical labor is being demanded of the people who are the victims of institutionalized discrimination and prejudice. I’m all for improving the lives of my community and communities like mine. But, this isn’t charity work. A more diverse work place improves a company’s bottom line, and gives them something to brag about in the press.

I personally love it. My work day is packed and I probably worked 70-80 hours the past few weeks but I feel honored to have a seat at the table on macro level discussions and work that isn’t mine to make things right for the greater good. Is there an uncomfortable burden on me? A real sacrifice? Yes. Do I feel though that if I’m not in that seat, the burden on others will be greater? Yes. Am I being paid extra to do it? No. But it gives me so much more meaning to the work we do. I have a much greater purpose beyond getting consumers to buy my product. One small change at a time I feel like I’m educating my colleagues and clients and creating far more responsible work. I definitely wish we had many more paid positions to take care of this but I see my agency making those moves as quickly as possible. But even when they are fully activated we need to ensure our brands are showing up authentically so I plan to stay involved even then

But to answer your question, if you don’t feel the same, just say no and explain why.

Been there. I said yes for the first time, and during that session I said that it shouldn't be just my responsibility as a BIPOC to do the work. It comes off better from a leader or a white person because if it comes from a BIPOC I feel like I'll be taken less seriously since it'll be "preachy". So after that, I wasn't invited as much anymore. They started reaching out to a greater number of people.

Depends on capacity. I’m experiencing this with a colleague and I don’t think it’s fair based on paid hours and volume of work. Putting up parameters is key, and not easy. You got to be consistent. You need support from more senior staff and depending how bad it is be willing to take it further. My parameters are that if I can accomplish the work during work hours I’m generally more willing. I also put parameters up based on my hired skill set. The problem here is the mentality that a CD does it all which is not true, it’s compounded by an industry culture that continues to downplay the amount of work and talent it takes to deliver great things. Like im a Kinkos. Take note on who’s being pressured to volunteer over others. That in itself says a lot. Who’s really getting the credit.
